“Better for Young Adults than Families”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2011

We've had good experiences with Affinia hotels previously, so I was disappointed that the Dumont didn't quite measure up. The location is great, the hotel is clean, the small kitchen was helpful, the beds were comfortable. But it took several requests and hours to get requested extra pillows and blankets (even though room information advertises the availability to order special pillows), shampoo and conditioner labels flaked off all over your hands in the shower and maids didn't provide refills the second day, and front desk staff couldn't provide information on the nearest Starbucks. Internet access on hotel computers wasn't free like in some hotels. Worst of all for us, there are no restrictions on outside people coming into the hotel and onto hotel floors. Young adults across from us decided to host a major birthday party in their room Sat. night and kept calling more friends from around the city to join them, bragging about having 10 people in a single room at one point. When we called the front desk, it sounded like a party in the lobby as well. They said they'd send security to ask the neighboring room to tone it down, but they never did. So if you're a young person looking for a party hearty hotel, this is the one for you (but not for everyone else)!

Dear LMomNY,

Thank you for your review. I am disappointed that we were unable to exceed your expectations of Affinia Hotels. I have spoken to our Director of Housekeeping regarding your experience with the requested pillows and blankets, as well as our Director of Front Office Operations in reference to the unusual situation with the neighboring guests. We know you have many options when selecting a hotel in New York City, and hope you will give us the opportunity to provide to you the superior experience you deserve.

Be well,

we stayed in this hotel for 4 nights. the information desk man was very helpful to tell us where to go and what to see. rooms were very clean with lovely beddings and pillows. the toiletery was very nice especially the olive soaps. the porters were extreemly friendly and helpful. I would stay there again :) oh yeh! the location was the best feature! only few bloks away from the Empire State Building (5 minutes walk)

Room Tip: we had a suit, was very big and lovely.

My husband, 3 year old and I stayed in the Affinia Dumont for 5 nights last week. We were really happy with everything about our stay: the room decor, size, cleanliness, hotel staff, bathroom, location, etc...
We first chose the hotel because of the large room size. We were very pleased to have enough room to play with our daughter, to work at the large desk, and generally relax. It was also really nice to have a kitchenette to use for our extended stay (one that involved leisure, work and family visits). The room was nicely decorated and very clean. The sheets and bedding were of a good quality and we loved the pillow menu. I can't wait to order a buckwheat pillow for my bed! The room was very quiet with only a handful of rooms on each floor. The elevators were quick and efficient. The air conditioning was effective and, even better, we could open the windows for a fresh breeze.
The Affinia Dumont wasn't posh or trendy but it was impeccable in every detail. I'm looking forward to staying there again soon.

I escorted a group on tour and selected the Dumont because my usual hotel was not available. This will be my first choice from now on. The rooms are huge for any city, but especially for New York. Location is great, within walking distance of N/S Avenues for taxi access and two blocks to the MTA Green Line. Every member of this small tour group loved the place. I'll be back

Arriving at the hotel after travelling from Australia was a welcome relief. Check in was easy, Everyone was so helpful. We had a room o nthe 37th floor and the view was fabulous, though cloudy at times. Didn't have much of a problem waiting for lifts, didn't seem too long. THe room was fantastic. We had a one bedroom suite and the bathroom was off the main bedroom. Good for us as we went to sleep later than our 3yo son who slept in the lounge. Amenities were very comfortable. Absolutely loved the kitchen though we didn't actually cook, mainly reheated. The full size fridge was fabulous. There was lots of room. We were there for over a week so we unpacked and all the cupboard space was great. IT didn't bother us at all theat hte tv's were not flat screen, they worked, no issue really. Great having a tv in the lounge and one in the bedroom. The location was excellent. Lots of markets, and drug store accross the road. Wide variety of restaurants too. We got take-away most nights and ate in our room as we were so tired from being out all day. The Barking dog was good, ate there twice but our 3yo got bored so not a relaxing experience. About a 10min walk to Macy's. everything was so handy. Never used the subway but did use the water taxi which was close by but am not sure that is still running. The onsite Laundry was very good, was in the basement. Was so easy not having to leave the hotel. I could switch a load on and go back to the room. It was still noisy on the 37th floor and I didn't sleep the best due to sirens as I am not used to it. I should have got earplugs, they may have helped. Overall I highly recommend this hotel, especially if you are travelling with children.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 May 2011

We recently returned from a six night stay at the Affinia Dumont. From start to finish, our stay was fantastic.

Firstly, the rooms. They are a very good size and the added touch of having a small kitchenette is excellent for enjoying a wee cup of tea/coffee at night (along with a cupcake from Magnolia Bakery - after a long day of sight seeing!).

A special mention to Candace and Tenille? (not sure of the spelling!). They were so pleasant and friendly. We had to book an extra night as we booked our flights back for a day later than we should have ! (Not a big problem!) And the two girls on reception did this for us without any hassle whatsoever!

On frequent occasions, we visited The Barking Dog for breakfast and drinks. Very reasonably priced and the food was delicious! The patio area is beautiful to sit and have a drink in the sun and unwind.

There is also a lovely restaurant called 'Hudson Place' (come out of the hotel, turn right and then make a left - keep walking for 3-5 mins). Food is gorgeous and for two starters, three mains and a bottle of prosecco - $100. Very reasonable!

We also got chatting to David the concierge who was able to provide us with a great amount of info regarding where to go in NY. One of his suggestions was to visit Wolfgangs steakhouse on park avenue. However, this happened to be one of the worst dining experiences we have ever had. Including asking us to move table during our meal, stares and whispers from staff and customers, smirks and cheeky comments from the manager and an addedd $34 tip which was not deserved! Would not recommend to anyone! Although we had a bad experience, David was fabulous at providing info regarding bars and other restaurants to visit :)

We also bought the explorer pass before visiting. $108 which works out about £62. This included 5 attractions and was in my opinion, great value for money.

However - to redeem our trip to Woodbury Commons Outlets, we had to visit Madam Tussauds to book our spaces on the bus. We were told by the guy that because we used the explorer pass for a citysights bus tour, we weren't allowed to use it for a bus trip to the outlets! (It states this nowhere!). However.... after revisiting the NY info centre to investigate this, we were told this was not true!! We returned to Tussauds and booked the trip to the oultets with another guy, no problem whatsoever! So don't let anyone tell you different!

We also caught a show on Broadway and managed to get tickets for Wicked the night before we wnated to go. We got this from the theatre for $86 each and the seats were fantastic, so sometimes it might be better to just wait and go directly to the theatre to get tickets.

We also visited Greenwich Village for dinner and drinks one night. Would recommend the Pink Tea Cup Bar (right across from Tiles of America). Try a pink martini! :)

Another must, is the top of the rock at night! WOW. Much better than empire state.

This trip was a belated 21st and graduation present and I had such a wonderful time (with the exception of the trip to Wolfgangs Park Av. - I have wrote a full review on their website).

Thank you to the hotel for making our holiday amazing!

Laura MacDonald

I've stayed at this hotel twice now. The location in midtown is great, and the hotel rooms are vast.
The price is high but in line with the sort of prices you pay in NYC, especially when you consider room size and location.
