“Good location; very compact room”

The hotel has a unique feel similar to hotels you might find in Tokyo:the room is tiny, but well designed. For example, beneath the bed is a space for luggage. Free wifi was good. There was a desk in the room but minimal space to hang clothes. The bathroom is situated in the room, divided strangely by a sliding glass door. This was fine for me travelling alone but you'd need to know anyone you were sharing with pretty well as the bathroom isn't exactly private! There is a great bar area with comfy chairs and a snack breakfast available for about $3/$4 depending whether you chose croissants or bagels with coffee. On the roof was a bar with great views of the city. The hotel is located close to grand central station and the concierge arranged an efficient shuttle bus for me to travel to Newark for $20. My room was facing the street but I wasn't troubled by any noise although it may be best to ask for a room at the back. All in all, a very pleasant stay.

I stayed in this hotel for a week, so got a good feel for the place.

I have to say that if you're looking for a reasonably priced hotel in Manhattan then this is a great place to stay. The rooms, as everyone says, are small, but that's pretty normal for Manhattan. I stayed in a Queen Room, which has a double bed in it. I think that for two people it would be a bit of a tight squeeze, but kinda do-able. Although you would have to know each other very well, as there is a sliding glass door between the bedroom and bathroom, so you can see and hear everything.

There is a walk way around two sides of the bed that is about the same size as the bredth of your suitcase - basically just wide enough for one person to walk around. If you were two people one person would have to sit on the bed or go in the bathroom for the other person to walk around.

There is storage under the bed for one large suitcase - not two. Although you could potentially stand one suitcase up in the corner. There is a large drawer under the bed for storing clothes etc and a rail with about 6 hangers on the wall.

The bathroom is nice. I read one review that said that there wasn't hot water in the sink - this isn't true, both the shower and the sink only have one tap, the further you turn it, the hotter the water gets, so you just need to turn the tap all the way around to get the hot water.

The cleaners change the towels and hand soap every day, which I think is a bit weird and a bit of a waste, so I just wrote them a note asking for them not to - to use a bar of soap once and then chuck it and put a new one in seems a bit odd - I'm happy to use a bar of soap to wash my hands more than once.

The bed is comfortable and the room very clean and well maintained. You only get a sheet and a quilted blanket on the bed though - I'd have liked a duvet, especially when the weather is not so warm.

There are a few small annoying things with the room. The room has an air con system for heating and cooling - unfortunately the vent for the air conditioning is right above the pillows in the ceiling, so it blows out air directly on your head which is not very nice. It's also pretty noisy, as it will keep clicking on and off to maintain the selected temperature. I ended up turning it off at night and dealing with the temperature because I found the noise irritating.

There is also a smoke detector above the bed that has a small green LED light that flicks on and off - not a huge light but also annoying to have it flicking on and off - you could easily stick a plaster over the light if it annoyed you though.

There is no information on the hotel in the room, but there is a phone and although I didn't use him, a concierge sitting in reception the whole time.

The location for this hotel is perfect! It's 5 to 10 min walk or less to:

The United Nations
The Chrysler building
The Empire State building
5th Avenue and all the shops - with that in mind, Macy's gives foreigners a 10% discount - just google visitor discount at Macy's and you can download the voucher.
Grand Central - there is a bus that goes from Newark Airport to 41st Street (next to Grand Central) which is just a 5 min walk (2 blocks) from the hotel. The bus is very convenient, cheap and runs every 15 mins.

There is a Taco restaurant in the hotel that is very trendy and gets quite busy later in the week. A main course is between $28 to $32 and the food is good.

There is also a very comfy lounge/bar area that does breakfast between 7am and 11am. Breakfast is $3 for a fresh croissant or $4 for a fresh bagel with cream cheese or butter. Both options include a choice of tea, coffee or very nice freshly squeezed orange juice - bargain!! You can't buy breakfast cheaper!

There is also a roof terrace bar, but I didn't see that as it was closed (too cold).

There are LOADS of shops and places to eat near the hotel and also a great hair dresser - Studio 34 - cheap and brilliant - perfect if you're heading out in the evening and want great hair!

All in all I have to say you get a great hotel for the prices they are charging you won't find a better hotel for this price in the area.

Room Tip: A higher room will get you a view and more sunlight. I stayed in 1609 which was nice, but could be...

I booked a two week stay at Pod 39 when travelling to New York for a course based near Grand Central. Pod 39 was well located for me and my course, and being in Mid Town, it was easy to get around town either walking or taking a short cab ride.

The rooms were small but they functioned well, and the use of space was effective - perfect if it's just one person. Try to request a room on a higher floor (higher than level 2) as the noise from the restaurant/bar downstairs travels... Also if you can get a room with a window in the bathroom it's just a bit nicer getting some natural light into your bedroom.

The restaurant below is great though, and a perfect place to meet friends for a drink or Mexican nibble.

The staff were very helpful and friendly. Young and fun.

The breakfast area is handy but it's not much except bagels and coffee. The breakfast room is quite dark too. Not an issue as there are tonnes of places near by to go for coffee and breakfast anyway.

I would definitely stay at Pod 39 again and thank the team for making my stay so great.

Cheers guys!

I shared a bunk bed room here for three nights and it met all our needs. If you are looking for somewhere with luxurious beds and lots of space then this is not for you. Everything is well designed with tvs, a shelf and a couple of power points for each bunk so that there are no issues with charging phones etc. The shower room again is very well organised - although the door isn't closed off so make sure you know the other person very well before sharing a room here! The only criticism is that although they had space to hang clothes and store a couple of tops, there wasn't any other storage space at all. However, as we were literally only sleeping and showering in the hotel it was a very convenient place to stay - and the location was fabulous!

The Pod 39 is the ideal hotel for a tourist visit in Ny for a couple. Take the queen size room, that is all ready small enough, but some things are well done in order to safe place. The place for the case under the bed, as the extra drawer under the bed to put some things. Ok, there is no wardrobe, but with some organization you find your way through. The bathroom is even small, but the shower is perfect. (You turn the tap whole the way to the left in order to have warm water - it took me sone time to understand the functioning). The room is cleaned up every day. We took a room on the 16th floor, but there are three elevators which do their job perfectly. Breakfast we normally took at the pret a manger at Madison corner.
The hotel is situated near the grand central railway station, which is beautiful but is also a stop for a lot of subway lines.

Wireless is for free and functions very good.

The only problem I never understand in a hotel is: why are the shower curtains always to small. You wont explain me that the 10 extra centimeter could make a difference and at least you would not have to wet the mirror.

But on the whole, we would certainly return here on a tourist visit to ny. We staid here for 5 nights but spent very little time in the room.

Had a mini bunk bed, although room is small, it was very well designed and comfortable. Each bed has its own TV. Location of the hotel is a plus, central to eveywhere you need to go, Central Station is just 3 blocks away. Area is nice and safe..will be back again in a heartbeat.

The hotel is decked out really nicely, it has modern fixtures & is kept super clean. The rooms are small and the frosted glass speparating the bed area from the toilet area make this perhaps not the best spot for a new couples first romantic break! That said it is surprisingly private.

The staff were very friendly and helpful and the bar restaurant was really nice with an excellent range of beers and cocktails, didn't try the food but it looked great.

Location was perfect for a New York holiday, 10 mins walk to Grand Central, 20-25 to Time Sq.

All in this was a perfect hub for our weeks break, would stay again!
