The hotel was exactly as advertised. The rooms are fairly small, but very well decorated - the beds are comfortable, it looks modern and there are TVs for every bed. The bathroom/shower were good, and the location in Midtown is unbeatable. Highly recommended as long as you're not looking for a luxury hotel.

We went there three times this year. The rooms are small but very clean and nicely designed. The area is nice and the rooftop terrasse is lovely. There is a few nice restaurants (Cafe Piccolo, Cafe China) in the area and the close by Grand Central make it a very good location. A good value for NYC.

If you are not fussy about room space but want a central location and nice clean place without having to pay twice or more at branded hotel chains, this is a good place. Staff are pleasant and keen to help. The single pod room is clean and has amenities like toiletries and hair dryer so works well for me. Lot's of food nearby and GCT is just a 4 min walk away. Only strange thing is that to get hot water in the shower you need to turn all the way up, and then tweak it for the temperature, by which time a fair amount of water would have been wasted, so points deducted for not being environmentally friendly. If this is fixed, it would be close to perfect for the price.

PROS: After taxes, paid $221 for one night in a Single Pod room recently for an overnight stay in the city. After searching all of the "budget" hotels on TripAdvisor, it was almost impossible to find a room in Manhattan for less than $350 a night that fit the bill of being both inexpensive AND well reviewed, so even though it's low frills, it's the best deal in Manhattan if you want a clean, basic room with a PRIVATE bathroom. I will return! (FYI: I have stayed at the Pod 51 once a few years ago and even though it was closer to Midtown, I like Pod 39 better, as there is no private bathroom option at Pod 51 for the lowest cost rooms).

Single Pod room comes with a double bed and a private bathroom (sink, toilet, shower stall). Under-bed storage, digital safe, hairdryer, small flat screen tv with many channels, great Pharmacopia verbena scented toiletries, free WiFi, lots of plugs (outlets, USB ports, etc.), rain shower head with good water pressure, four regular sized pillows, loud wake up call. The hotel is located within walking distance of delis, cafés, restaurants, banks, Grand Central Terminal, on a side street of a residential block.

CONS: Air conditioning unit was a little loud (but it worked). TINY airplane sink, water got everywhere. You could hear peoples' voices in the hallways. I was on the fifth floor of a 17 floor hotel, and I could hear street noise. Salvation Taco is a thriving party scene restaurant and bar, open until 2am. The towels are very thin, small and worn - they need replacing. The glass doors to the bathroom are on rollers and have a tendency to roll closed, so be careful in case you walk into them.

Stayed here on a week long stay in New York with a friend. I dare you to try to find a more reasonable room with two beds and an en suite bathroom. Yes, they were bunk beds but they were reasonably comfortable, and as quiet as you can get in New York. We did not find the frosted glass wall of the bathroom a problem.

For what you pay for, it's clean and comfortable (if not spacious) in a good neighborhood. I'd feel comfortable staying there by myself. Very convenient to Grand Central Station.

I have only two complaints from the stay. First, bring your own washcloth. For whatever reason, they do not provide them. Not a huge deal, and if you forget you can always get one at the Duane Reed drugstore down the street.

The biggest annoyance is the current renovation(?) going on in front of the restaurant, which means that restaurant patrons must use the hotel lobby for access. The restaurant and rooftop bar are apparently very popular with the 21-30 crowd, which means that in the evenings (and especially on weekends), you often have to wade your way through a crowd to get to the elevator. If this isn't your scene, you might find it annoying at best.

If you do manage to find a quiet time to visit it - or not, depending on your preference - the rooftop bar is a very scenic place to hang out.

Sure it feels like a bit like a college dorm, but for little over $100 for a night in NYC, it was great. Clean, well-kept room, with no space wasted. A sink plug and an iron would have been nice, but no big deal. I wanted a clean, reasonable place to stay near Grand central for a one-day meeting in NYC and Pod 39 met my expectations. Lobby bar/taco joint was a nice touch, although the $13 Margarita had traditional NYC pricing. Don't hesitate to give it a try if you know what to expect.

Room Tip: Middle floors are probably best for sound purposes.

Pod 39 was an awesome hotel. The Hotel rooms are small (which is the concept of the POD) but smartly laid out. We were in the Mini Bunk rooms. Each Bunk had its own flat screen TV, small ledge with electrical outlets to plug in your ipod, computer etc. There was desk and chair. We had free WIFI and a safe which was awesome. The rooms were uber clean and the beds comfy.
The bathroom has all glass with a sliding door. All the glass is frosted which creates quite the image with someone is in there.
Location Location Location. we could not have asked for a better location. Walking distance to Grand Central Station . Plus the roof top patio is quite the happening place right now for local New Yorkers. the place is hopping every night. I will definitely stay there again on my next visit.
