Great pub-like decor and a menu filled with food that you would recognize in the old country. The prices weren't too bad and the food we had was good and hit the spot. The Guinness was good - thick and creamy - just like it should be.

This warm and friendly ( albeit noisy ) pub-like eaterie is fortunately for this reviewer only two blocks from my New York apartment ! — I went there quite frequently for many years past as it was known as a neighborhood ( upper west - side )get together watering hole for all us arty types . It still has that flavor under its new management as of the last several years . The food is even better now , though more pricey . Still by. Manhattan standards and in this
neighborhood the prices are not unreasonable . In nice weather there are several tables outdoors for people -watching .. . Two blocks away is the Museum of Natural History , a fascinating treat in itself and a must-visit for the
visitor to New York. For standard and typical Irish fare the St. James hits the spot ..no especially fancy or creative dishes ..the bar drinks and service are excellent and casual.

This is a great place for a drink and comfort food at affordable (for NYC) prices. The staff are lovely and the food is OK, if a little greasy. The portions are HUGE and very filling. Unless you are feeding teenage football players, the shepherd's pie should be shared and some of the grease drained off. Salads are good. One of the few pubs where sports are playing on every television, but there are still quiet nooks if you aren't into the game. The potatoes in the bangers and mash and shepherd's pie appear to made with instant, which is pretty poor for Irish food, and the shepherd's pie needed onions, but still not bad at all. Great beer selection and an excellent cider.

I was staying nearby so I stopped in for a late lunch. The "Steak Salad" was one of the specials so knowing I was going to skip dinner I ordered it. Mistake...Every single piece of steak had sinew in it. I should have sent it back but didn't. It wasn't cheap either; $17 !!!

We called in for a drink after a day of sightseeing and loved the ambience so we stayed for dinner. Very reasonably priced food and fantastic quality. Service was very good without being intrusive. If I was a local I'd be here all the time.
