“Great Choice for a Hotel in Midtown”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 October 2013

This is one great little hotel. New with a funky industrial decor and very generous-sized rooms. Staff is friendly and very accommodating. Basha with the bell staff had a smile on every time we saw him and was genuinely interested in how our stay was going. The roof top bar has a stunning outlook - well worth the effort to go upstairs. We found the staff there to be not nearly as friendly as the folks in the hotel but the view made the visit there worthwhile. The restaurant adjoining the hotel is OK but there are far better choices form dining in this city. The mid-town location makes everything convenient as many have commented, especially with Bryant Park so close by. The Refinery is a winner!

I have recently returned from my first trip to NYC with the girls. A lot of time was spent researching different hotels. We decided on the Refinery and we were not at all disappointed. There was a fabulous warm welcome as soon as we stepped out of the taxi and this continued throughout our 4 night stay, the staff were friendly and helpful at all times. The bedroom was perfect with the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. Great size bathroom with plenty of space for all our toiletries! The hotel's Parker and Quinn restaurant had a fantastic atmosphere
serving delicious food and cocktails!! The location is great close to 5th Avenue and Madison so perfect for shopping. The rooftop bar was the icing on the cake with stunning views of the Empire State, we were lucky to have good weather for early October so made the most of it enjoying an early evening drink on the roof! I have a special birthday next year so am hoping to return with the girlies. Thank you all at the Refinery for making our stay memorable.

We spent a whole week at the Refinery and loved it. The location is very convenient, just 2 blocks south of Bryant Park. The facility itself is new, with a flair of a slightly larger boutique hotel. Nice rooftop bar. Our room was large, well appointed, with a nice view of the Empire State Building. However, the BEST thing about the Refinery is the service. By far the best that I have come across in any NYC hotel. The management and staff - all went out of their way to accommodate our every request, and to make sure we enjoyed our stay. This was not just paying lip-service to good service, but a real attention to the guests. It made all the difference.

We just returned from our weekend stay at the Refinery Hotel. Its location is great--close to Bryant Park and a short walk to the Empire State Building and to Rockefeller Plaza. The hotel is new and beautifully decorated with a modern, but comfortable flair. The rooms are pretty typically sized by NYC standards but could use a bit more storage room. I wasn't crazy about the lighting in the room because we weren't able to turn off the bedside lighting from our beds. I feel these are fairly petty concerns, but they are worthy of a mention. Although the drinks are a bit pricey, the rooftop bar is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL with a great view of the Empire State Building. The most impressive facet of the Refinery Hotel is its staff. Everyone was truly helpful and went out of their way to be polite, pleasant, and accommodating. Especially helpful and kind was a young man named Bosha who went out of his way to make us feel welcome and to help us in any way that he could. He was truly a delight!! You've got a very nice hotel with a GREAT staff. Keep up the good work, Refinery Hotel!!

the refinery is a really great option in the middle of all the hustle and bustle., especially if you're there for work (i.e .expense account). 38th st is not the prettiest, but 2 blocks take you to bryant park which is lovely. it's also very convenient to plenty of subway lines and, if you like to walk, you're in the centre of it all. it wasn't a bargain by any means, no expense account alas, we stayed mid-september which is a pricey time of year in new york-but also a lovely time to visit, great weather. we had an introductory deal for the first night which made it a little easier, and closer to the more humdrum hotel price points, so it made sense to go for it.
we had a queen studio on the 11th floor, looking on to 39th street and it was very quiet at night, surprisingly so. the air conditioning was also quiet, no sudden clanging into action at 3 am, so that was a plus. i didn't like that the sensor-drink tray was placed right next to the bed, i hope that wasn't a deliberate attempt to get accidental nudges during the night. anyway i requested it to be moved away so problem solved. no inadvertent charges for the $50 mini whiskey... the bathroom was fine, although there were signs that the place was built in a hurry; the hot and cold taps were backwards (hot was cold, cold was hot) and it took 2 puzzled mornings in the shower before we realised the center thingy on the shower control was not supposed to spin around. crappy toiletries the first night, then quality stuff for the next 2... could that have reflected the lower price for the first night?? hopefully not. and as others have noted, there's very little storage or hanging space.
we had breakfast one morning in the restaurant, parker and quinn, it was good although the service was a bit disorganised. also, as the gratuity was added to the total, i didn't appreciate the attitude when i requested my change. but-good food. we had dinner there too, it was ok, but it felt a little dreary for some reason. we also had a few drinks on the rooftop bar-very nice, although the velvet rope at the elevators is a little much.
anyway, it's a good option, the staff are friendly and we had a good stay.

Room Tip: the 11th floor is quiet

I just got back from spending a week at the Refinery Hotel. OUTSTANDING in every way. The rooms are big (by New York standards), and the closets, though a bit small, are easily doubled by dragging the drawer stand out of the closet and into the main living area.

But the real beauty is the service. Nothing is a problem, and in fact, when I admired the bell raincoats, one of the bellman (Sammy) even tried to gift me his raincoat!

Sammy is a wonderful ambassado for a great hotel!

Perfect area, easily accessible to uptown or downtown. Well designed and finished. A rooftop bar where you actually feel comfortable if you are over 25.

Couldn't recommend it more highly.

Note to the hotel: think about moving the drawers out of the closet to double the space? Certainly I am not the first person who has done that.

I live in NYC, but at times we need to stay a couple of days in a hotel - example, Hurricane Sandy or when my housekeeper in on leave and I cant bear to see my mess anymore! This weekend stay fell in the second category...

Very impressed with the renovation - brings in the spirit of the Design District very subtly and beautifully. Staff was great! Yes, its a new hotel and they are not yet jaded by years of dealing with demanding guests - enjoy it till then!

I loved the upstairs rooftop. Magical veiws of the Empire State and Bank of America buildings. Part was covered, so it helps when you get to chilly outside, you step in for a few minutes. I think like their house cocktails much though... Stick to good old stuff...

Finally, I have a good neighbourhood hotel thats value for money and I can put my visitors up when they need more space than my NYC-sized 2-bedroom!!

Room Tip: Avoid rooms facing 6th avenue...
