There are several Thai restaurants in this neighborhood, and a number of very reasonable choices. I like Chanpen for a couple of reasons -- the staff are welcoming and seem to really care about the customers; the food is consistently good; the tables are pretty spread out, so you are not on top of everyone else and can talk; and there is a great deal at lunch. I saw one really bad review of this place. I have not had any bad experiences here in a couple of dozen visits.

The worst Thai food I've ever had. The veg pad Thai was tasteless and soupy. The rice tasted if dirty water. The veg dumplings were chewy. Absolutely repulsive food.

We had just seen a taping of the Lettterman show, didn't know what we wanted for dinner but didn't want to walk too far. Obvious answer was to walk to 9th Ave Hells Kitchen. We walked a block or two, looked across the street and there was a fresh clean, nice looking Thai restaurant. Crossed the street and saw a reasoably priced prix fixe and the inside looked great.
Walked in, greated low key, quickly and pleasantly. Service was quick and efficient, water glasses were filled regularly. I had a feeling that there were too many people involved with service. We ordered from the prix fix although there seemed to be a number of great choices on the regular menu. Order especially the Tom Yum soup-spicy but really good. The other dishes were good examples Thai food. I've had comparable but this was definitley good and I'd expect to return for a meal after a matinee or before an evening activity.

Service was good - polite, timely, caring but not pushing. Food was great - green duck was done as I asked, dumplings were great, all food in a balanced, not small but not huge amount, Tables were very small, like in most of Thai places, so the waitress had to watch for any empty plate for a immediate removal - it is probably just they way Thai people think of food. If to ignore tight space, the rest was very good. Will go there next time in NY.

Pretty extensive menu for small hells kitchen restaurant, love the green curry with duck for $16, huge amount of duck :) Chang beer for $3, perfect meal to linger over. As someone who has been many times to Thailand this hit the spot :)
