“Excellent Indian food in a quiet, comfortable setting”
Reviewed 14 July 2013

A small, quiet, subdued, plush seating arrangement made for a delightful dining experience.
We had stuffed baby eggplant and zucchini dumplings with rosemary pita bread and Indian beer.
If you're looking for a good midtown Indian dining experience you won't go wrong here.

“Excellent Indian food”
Reviewed 13 July 2013 via mobile

We had been to Amma years ago and truly enjoyed our meal. When we returned to the city for a weekend we decided to try it again and enjoyed ourselves even more. We had the non-vegetarian tasting menu which is a prix-fix $50 per person. It was absolutely wonderful. There were several courses of appetizers and two main courses. Each dish was wonderfully prepared and presented. The vegetables were crisp, the sauces so very flavorful, the sea bass and lamb were distinctive and excellent. Our party of six was presented with 5 different deserts, all of which were scrumptious. I've read a lot of reviews of this restaurant, many of which describe inattentive and rude staff. We were treated very, very well.

“AMMA or DAWAT........how to decide”
Reviewed 12 July 2013

We have a choice on the upper eastside when it comes to an Indian dinner. Amma or Dawat. The food at Amma is different and, one might argue, a little better......but food at Dawat is excellent too. Service here might be a little better..........but service at Dawat is excellent too. As for comfort, Dawat wins hands down. And that might explain why we mostly go to Dawat and didn't remember being at Amma until I began to write my review on Zagat and saw that we'd been there twice before. I guess that says it all. Two great choices however and the people at both are lovely.

“You can find better in NYC”
Reviewed 11 July 2013

Food was ok. In fact, one of the starters did not have enough salt. Place seemed run down. I am not sure how this is the top Indian restaurant on Tripadvisor ratings. In any event, thsi was probably a 2 star but I am being generous here.

“Creative, Wonderful Service and Atmosphere”
Reviewed 26 June 2013

Chose Amma from TripAdvisor recommendations and so glad we did! This was one of the best dinners we had on our trip to NYC, even better than another Indian restaurant with higher ratings. The service was impeccable, and atmosphere very cozy and romantic (corner booths for couples to sit next to each other while dining). We ordered the tasting menu, which was about a 7 course dinner and included a sampling of many of the restaurants dishes. The selections were definitely more creative than the typical Indian dishes (e.g. butter chicken, tikka masala, tandoori chicken). Highly recommend!
