It was really fun cycling around Central Park. It was Sunday arvo. Plenty of things happening. Music, stunts performed. Guitar at strawberry fields. Easy riding, I'm 50!! So much easier to cycle than walk if your time is limited. We were advised to stay with our bikes. You can take a lock to use.

If it isn´t raining and it is your first time to Central Park, is a must to visit it by riding on bike. I suggest you to go afternoon late, when most museums and other attractions are closed. This attraction is included in the New York Pass (NYP), which I highly recommend if you are planning a visit to NY of 7 days of less. Have a look at: http://www.newyorkpass.com.
With the NYP you get 3 hours of free rental of a bike, without it is about $ 49. Take into account that it takes 1 hour approx. to give 1 lap to the park, at a moderate speed. I highly recommend you to take water in order to refresh. Be careful if you rent the bikes late in the afternoon, take into account that you must give bikes back before the store closing time, otherwise you will have to pay charge for being late. Use your watch, ride north half the time you planned to be riding on bike, then go back south, with that simple action you will be on time surely.

We rented bikes a few blocks from Central Park and I had arranged it online ahead of time. We are a family of five with three young children ages 6,7,and 10. When we arrived the staff were courteous and helpful in getting our kids outfitted (all children under 14 must wear helmets) and bikes fitted to their size needs. The kids were thrilled with the opportunity. I would say the adult bikes were not spectacular, but hey after all they were rentals. We headed up Broadway Ave to reach Central Park (about three blocks). There is a nice bike lane and the kids did a great job getting to CP. We then biked all the way around the perimeter of the park stopping for brunch at Tavern on the Green. The biking was fun, a bit harrowing at times as there are a multitude of bikers, joggers, walkers, etc. again, its CP after all. It was a learning experience for the kids as they HAD to pay attention. Also some of the hills were a bit challenging and required some walking of the bikes for the little ones while other hills required exhortation. It became one of the best memories of our trip to NYC.

We decided to rent bikes & cycle around Central Park as it is just too big to walk around in a couple of hours. We rented bikes for $15 per person for 2 hrs from a bike rental shop a block from Central Park. We are a family of 5 with our daughter being the youngest at 11 years of age & all the bikes were fitted to our sizes & we were given helmets etc at no extra charge. The bikes were in a reasonable condition and we had no trouble in using them. We found the cycle around the park invigorating although a trifle cold as it was winter time when we did it. There are a couple of hills to climb as you ride around although with the geared bikes we managed to get up without too much difficulty. It was certainly a highlight of our visit to New York, one our family will never forget. We thoroughly recommend hiring a bike to see all the sights Central Park has to offer.

It's really fun to explore Central Park on your own via a Bike and renting one is easy and very affordable. Not to mention the physical benefits associated with biking!
