“Nice hotel in great location but.....”

but it could be SO much better. Its an old property thats was redone some time ago. Many of the touches are very nice but there are a few little things that should be much better for $400+ a night.

The shower head was the worst head of any Marriott I have stayed in thru the last decade. Maybe it was low water pressure but the (adjustable) head barely sprayed anything outside of about a 6" cone pattern.

The wallpaper was peeling in the bathroom. In many places.

Mold in the caulk in the shower.

The shower door would not stay closed, so water go all over.

The door had about a 1.5" gap under it that I had to stuff a towel under so I didnt hear every noise in the hall.

Breakfast buffet was quite good, but with limited options.

Staff was friendly.

I am a Platinum and asked for a view but only got a low floor back corner room. Hmmmm.

No concierge lounge at this property.

This hotel can't be beat if you are looking for a great hotel on Central Park South. From the minute you walk in the door the staff bends over backwards to accommodate your wishes. Literally walk across the street to Central Park for a carriage ride or a nice walk to Strawberry Fields. Dinner, entertainment and a great local deli all within blocks, as well as the Subway. Not the least expensive hotel in New York but you are DEFINITELY getting what you pay for with above and beyond service. Anna in guest relations really helped make our stay comfortable. I have stayed before & I will stay again, Thanks Marriott!

My daughter and I recently spent 5 nights at the Essex House for a girls' getaway. I have to say I don't understand the ho-hum reviews of this hotel. From the moment we checked in to the moment we left, we had a fabulous experience here. Check in was quick and efficient. We arrived earlier than scheduled check-in time and our room was ready so we were able to go ahead and check in. The front desk clerk asked if we were there to celebrate anything special and I told them that we were visiting NYC to celebrate my daughter's 13th birthday and she made a note of her name and birthday. We were immediately whisked to the junior suite that I had reserved -- which I considered a bargain for NYC at $399 per night. Our room was huge and very comfortable -- king bed, living room area with sofa, chairs, and coffee table, large walk-in closet, huge bath with separate shower and tub, and an entry area. Amenities were excellent, from 24 hour room service to twice daily maid service and turn down service to very plush robes, slippers, upscale toiletries, and bath sheets. Our room was immaculately clean.

The hotel really went out of their way to make my daughter's birthday special, from sending her a small "Welcome to NYC" gift to providing a complimentary cake and beverages the evening of her birthday. All of the staff was friendly and helpful, including the very helpful concierge team. The location is convenient, right on Central Park South, just steps away from Central Park and the Time Warner Center and either the 57th street (at 7th Ave) or Columbus Circle subway stops. You can walk pretty much everywhere in Midtown and the Upper West Side from the Essex House.

We didn't have breakfast at the hotel -- it's very pricey -- but did walk around the corner to a couple of great little cafes (I recommend the Café Metro for bagels and other breakfast items as well as Bouchon in the Time Warner Center for pastries). Plus, Sarabeth's -- one of the best places in NYC for breakfast and brunch -- is just down Central Park South. We did order room service for lunch one day and really enjoyed the mezze platter and the cheese plate. I should also note that there is a fantastic little pizza place adjacent to the hotel (out the back door just across 58th Street) called Bella Vita -- delicious brick oven slices and very inexpensive (2 cheese slices for $5.50!)

But the best thing about this hotel is how QUIET it is -- I've never slept so well in NYC. The way the rooms are arranged on each floor (there are several small corridors with just a room or two off of each one) minimizes the noise from the elevator and neighboring rooms. We stayed in room 2116 with a city view and partial view of Central Park and loved it. You absolutely can't go wrong here.

This place has seen better times, however, I would commend the service people in the hotel, because they are true professionals and provide excellent service. Marriott should do a face lift on the hotel because the location is great and the staff and service personnel are wonderful.

Have stayed at Plaza and Ritz both on Central Park South - each is FAR SUPERIOR to this hotel in every way. No on site dining, bar closes at 12:30am, Peter in the bar is fantastic. The inclusive breakfast not worth it, a block away on Columbus Circle is Whole Foods inside - better food.

Stayed in room 2018, what they sell as a Central Park view room is pretty lame = very obstructed, not a direct view. Would recommend a higher floor for better view as the adjacent buildings obstruct and this would go away if you were located up higher. Was with family, my young children had hard time sleeping on the pull out sofa with paper thin mattress of box springs. When I inquired about getting a higher floor I was told nothing was available yet the hotel did not seem super busy?

The location itself is great, very central with the subway close by for ease of access to other parts of town.

Room Tip: Get room high up (above 30th floor) - be aware that a 1 bedroom suite in xx18 room does not have a s...

Very disappointed with the accommodations, but the location couldn't be better. The bathroom was grungy, the towels were actually thinner than the towels at the midtown fairfield inn where we stayed the previous weekend. Shabby.
