“Wonderful stay, great location”
Reviewed 4 March 2014

Fabulous location right across the street from Central Park, easy walk to all kinds of shopping, museums and galleries. Quick 15 minute cab ride to most areas - the meat packing area for shopping and dining, Times Square, etc. Our room was a double queen, spacious and clean, with a large entrance (with closet) and good sized bathroom, not luxurious but nice. Our room didn't have a view over Central Park which was okay for us it was lovely and quiet (great dark room shades). In fact it was so quiet it was hard to believe you were in a big city so I would highly recommend the interior rooms. The front desk staff, bell hop and concierge were very helpful and friendly with good recommendations for dining. I hate that they charge you for internet, that's a policy that really needs reviewing, a bit archaic in these times. I would have loved to have a coffee machine in our room, most hotels either provide a keurig, nespresso, tea, free water. Our only complaint is that housekeeping seemed to be a bit slow and skimpy on the bath products. One day on our way out in the late afternoon we asked the front desk to make sure housekeeping serviced our room. They did but the fact that we had to ask shows that they need to tighten up that area. I would most definitely stay here again when visiting NYC.

Room Tip: The interior rooms without the view of Central Park are so nice and quiet.

We had a last minute request to add a NYC stop to our east coast trip, and on a whim, my husband checked out the Essex House for a room. A week earlier, we had celebrated our 31st wedding anniversary, and yes, 31 years ago - we were married in the Essex House. JW Marriott was not the owner at the time - and it has gone through changes since, but it was convenient to meetings and we thought it would be fun. Well - it was much more than just fun. From the greeting in the lobby to the well appointed room, the outstanding bed and lovely amenities, we had an enchanting time. We ordered room service to savor the memories - and the server, Elias, surprised us with a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries when we confided why we had chosen his hotel. His pride in his 23 year career at Essex House showed in his - and everyone else's - service. We will not wait 31 years before making a return to the Essex House!

I don’t think that i have been to another JW Marriott in which I came back home and described it as "Ehhhh". The location is fantastic just off the south central park drive. The architecture is interesting with toms of character and history.
My room did face Central Park but was fairly low to the ground, this left something to be desired as the noise made it tough to sleep. I suggest asking for a room at the 5th floor or above.
The biggest room for improvement wasn’t the noise as much as the quality of windows in the room. Although i only had one window, it was large but extremely inefficient. The cold from the window was so bad that I literally could feel a 10-15deg climate change if I walked near it. The only way to get the room to warm up was to close both the blind and curtain.

Room Tip: Choose a Park view room but stay above the 5th floor!

From check in to check out, this Hotel was very good. Our room (while not a great view) was very big and comfortable. The bed was heavenly. Soaking tub in the bathroom was wonderful. I would say the only thing that was not the best was the bar. SLOW Service unfortunately.
Our concierge recommendations were good - especially the breakfast place a couple blocks away. I loved being that close to Central Park.

The room was huge and luxurious. The staff was extremely helpful and accommodating and the location is spectacular. Loved it and had a great weekend. It was everything I would expect of a high end hotel. I would not have breakfast there. Too many other good options nearby.

My Family spent Christmas in New York, and stayed in Essex House fro the duration of just under a week.

We love New York.... so much to do and so much to see and so many great restaurants...we will come back maybe during warmer clime!!

Hotel location is very good and have easy access to lot of places.

However, the hotel rooms were very small and very tired and veery noisy. The bathroom was borderline to becoming unclean.

The most disappointing were lack of facilities to chill out. We came back from a day of sightseeing or shopping, we would find and be told that the only place for the family to chill and relax is to prop up and stand at the bar for a coffee or a drink!!! Not good enough, that would never happen in an Oberoi, Ritz or any other up market hotel. The staff was rude after we tipped them, and they were not helpful at all.

Breakfast Buffet was inadequate and lukewarm...we ate our breakfast elsewhere!!

We learnt to relax and rest at other establishments before we return to Esssex House.

I am afraid i would not be back to Essex House.

Room Tip: For the price, i am sure just down the road, there are ritz, and other hotels, which might be better...

Bring lube this place has the worst service and staff I have encountered. No bell hop, valet has a chip on his shoulder, front office hands you your key and bills you no directions or assistance.
Coffee while we wait for the car [30 min] 10 bucks a coffee bahahahahha c'mon I get it great location and building, good rooms but pretend like 280 bucks still classifies you as a customer....this place is almost laughable.
Ps the Internet charge doesn't account for horrible connection and the 24 hr valet gets charged every time you use your car. Something that you would imagine would be told to you on the invoice or before retrieving your vehicle.
IMO theses guys are at best well dressed crooks.
