Description: Here at 133 Mulberry Street, Ristorante S.P.Q.R. has been created in the heart of New York's Little Italy as a monument to Italian cuisine. Over two thousand years have passed since the time of Romulus. The initials S.P.Q.R. are still today, a monogram in Rome and can be seen throughout the beautiful acient city. The Arches, gateways to Rome, bear the inscription S.P.Q.R. and give a feeling of warmth and welcome to the traveler upon entering the city. It is with great pride that Ristorante S.P.Q.R.-Senatus Populus-Que Romanus uses this monogram. Just as the Senate and the poeple of Rome welcomed friends, travelers and countrymen, Ristorante S.P.Q.R. welcomes you to enjoy a truly fine dining experience.

This restaurant is all boarded up now. I heard that a Christmas Tree Shop will be taking over the building.

“Great Outdoor Front Patio”
Reviewed 14 March 2013

My spouse and I dined at SPQR for lunch in mid-December 2012. (SPQR stands for Senatus Populusque Romanus, which means the Senate and People of Rome.) Note that this restaurant is not associated with the 1-Michelin starred restaurant called SPQR in San Francisco. This property is located on Mulberry Street in Little Italy, where one Italian restaurant after another line both sides of the street. This restaurant is larger than its competitors, with both indoor and outdoor seating. The large main dining room features hardwood floors and lots of windows. We think that we saw signs indicating additional seating on the second floor (perhaps banquet rooms, because they also offer a family-style menu). Restrooms are on the basement level; however, we did not see an elevator for handicapped access. The restaurant has a nice covered porch/patio out front, as well as additional tables (uncovered) on the sidewalk. Even though we dined in December, it was a rather warm day, and we were able to enjoy the outdoor sidewalk atmosphere. If you are interested in dessert and you have dined outside, take a walk inside to look at the dessert display (it is on a rolling cart, but they cannot wheel it outside); the appearance of the desserts is much prettier than their menu descriptions sound.

Service started out strong, then faltered, but the food was good and reasonably priced (for NYC). (One example, the server asked us if we would like grated cheese, but then never brought it around to our table, despite taking it to other nearby tables.) The lunch menu is an abbreviated version of the dinner menu, with slightly smaller portions and slightly lower prices; however, we requested to order from the dinner menu and were easily accommodated.

We enjoyed our meal, particularly dining outdoors, but with so much competition just steps away, we would probably try somewhere different the next time.

“Good Food But Small Portions”
Reviewed 24 January 2013

This is a very nice restauranr. Good service and good food. However, for the prices that they charge the main courses are small. So you need to have dessert if you are still hungry after the main course. Desserts are also not cheap.

“Looks nice but there are better options”
Reviewed 31 December 2012

Among the multiple Mulberry Street restaurants in Little Italy, SPQR wins the street-side battle. It looks elegant from the sidewalk. However, the food is average at best and the wine and service could be better. There are better options along Mulberry Street - don't be fooled by the decore.

“Pleasant surprise on Mulberry Street”
Reviewed 31 December 2012

In the city for our annual December shopping trip and we always go to Chinatown and stop in Little Italy for lunch. This year, we got a recommendation for S.P.Q.R. and decided to try it. The restaurant had classy Christmas decorations and the inside is very spacious, unlike many of the restaurants in that area. Dark hardwood floors, white linens and tables with plenty of room between them. The service was good and our waiter was very accomodating to 3 women with special food needs...of course! I'm on the wheat belly diet, so I had a tossed sald and two meatballs for my entree. The salad was large, with a variety of lettuces and vegtables and just the right amount of light dressing. The meatballs were fabulous; some of the best I have had and very filling. Another gal had the clams linguine and loved it. We're pretty particular abut our food, so I'm giving this a very good rating for both the food and the service. It's so much better than the other restaurants in Little Italy that we have visited. We'll be back next year.
