Description: Opened in 1980, La Ripaille is one of the oldest restaurants in West Village. Some of the regulars have been coming for as long as 25 years. We want everyone to feel welcome here, whether it’s the celebrities who frequent, the children for whom we provide games & crayons, or the people who live in the Village. The owner, Alain Laurent, is integral in the day-to-day processes of La Ripaille. He daily scours the market for the freshest produce, often choosing the day’s specials based on his finds. This keeps the specials seasonal & unique. He decorates the ever changing wine list with the best wines available. The restaurant itself is beautiful, with a terrace for the summer & a fireplace in the back for the winter. The candlelit tables light up French posters and paintings & fresh flowers decorate each table. For a taste of history and delicious French cuisine, visit La Ripaille. We have a seat just for you.

“Attentive staff, Food tasty but nothing special”
Reviewed 29 May 2012

Dined here on a warm, pleasant Friday evening. Sat at the small outdoor seating area - the sidewalk is wide here - so the traffic was not bothersome. Salmon and pasta, sausage and pasta dishes were ok. Disappointed b/c the were no crepes available (entree or desert - all gone already - hard to understand) the interior looked charming and romantic.
Staff very pleasant

“A "Very French" West Village Restaurant”
Reviewed 6 October 2011

Restaurants come and go in the West Village, but La Ripaille endures decade after decade. We go there for intimate dinners, and celebrations, large and small. The food is beautifully prepared. I adore the broccoli mousse. The pate is outstanding. The fish is always extremely fresh and perfectly prepared. The children love the pasta dishes here. The chicken is tender and perfectly done. The steak perfectly sauced. Some people will take exception to the small portion sizes. Pardon Moi? Have they never been to France? This is a French restaurant. One of the reasons we love LaRapaille, is we don't leave feeling like stuffed pigs, but rather we leave warm and satisfied, with our taste buds feeling blessed.

The wine list is small, but excellent and well priced. The mixed drinks are made with finesse. The desserts are splendid, especially the apple tart. And, the atmosphere is real French Bistro: Warm candles flicker; you can hear yourself talk, while French music wafts softly overhead. The other patrons vary: local villagers: families, even book clubs, groups of friends, politicians, well knows film and stage stars, dancers, romantic couples, straight and gay alike, and often people from France, which tells you a lot.

The owner, Alain, who seems to always be there, is jovial and charming and sets a warm and rather fabulous tone. His favorite word is "fabulous." Everyone we have ever taken to LaRipaille wanted to go back. So, enjoy yourselves, and hopefully you too will leave smiling, and feeling it's a place to which you'll want to return to, as we do, again and again.

“Wonderful, quiet, romantic, delicious”
Reviewed 9 September 2011

My husband and I have been here for dinner several times. Each time has been like a trip to France without the airplane. The food and service are lovely, gracious and adult.

“Great lunch find”
Reviewed 10 August 2011

Our family of four visited New York in late June early July 2011. We spent a very happy 2 weeks exploring various neighbourhoods and were pleased to come across La Ripaille on one of our adventures. We had an enjoyable summer lunch at an outdoor table overlooking a farmer’s market in Abingdon Square. The owner was wonderful – Alain and happily accommodated my 12 year old’s limited tastes a pasta dish that he enjoyed. We had salads, mine the duck – delicious and my daughter and husband both had a fantastic tarragon chicken salad that they still talk about. The service was great, attentive but not rushed and prices were reasonable. The restaurant looked perfect for a special occaision or a quiet romantic meal. We will be back on our next visit to New York.
