For a different view of NY, take a walk along the HighLine. This well-designed walking path offers vantage viewing points of many areas of the city, as well as sculptures, graffiti, gardens, resting areas, artisian food/drink spots etc....It's a real oasis in the city.

Came here in the summer and was a very nice walk on a lovely day. It's great to get away from the traffic (and constant crossings) but you do still hear all the cars and construction work - so definitely not a tranquil place.

Also worth noting there isn't a huge amount of things to see alongside the walk, i.e. the main things you see are the plants along the walk not any NYC sights.

Thank tom p

Excellent walk. Very interesting how an old railway line has been transformed into a walk with flora and art creations. Seating is available along the walk and kiosks for water, ice lollies etc.

Most people know about the Highline by now, it's certainly not a hidden gem, but it is a raised world away from the streets below. It's fascinating just to think that a train line used to run there. The planting and landscaping is beautiful, with lots of interesting features to see and places to sit and relax. It also offeres some great views down on the streets and up to buildings that you wouldn't necessarily look at from the street level. Well worth the visit.

The High Line is a 1-mile linear park built on a section of the elevated former New York Central Railroad spur called the West Side Line, which runs along the lower west side of Manhattan; it has been planted as an aerial greenway. Inspired by Paris' La Promenade Plantée, the High Line currently runs from Gansevoort Street, three blocks south of West 14th Street, in the Meatpacking District, to 30th Street, through the neighborhood of Chelsea. By the end of 2014 the section to West 34th St should open. It's a pleasant walk a couple stories above the street that offer nice views. There are exits about every two to three streets. There are benches, chaise lounges on the tracks and an area with flowing water to cool your feet.
