This is another hidden gem we just found. It's a tram that holds many people and travels above the East River to Roosevelt Island. There's a bus on the island which takes you on a short ride...this island had lots of history. Another "Don't Miss" in New York and be sure to take some pictures!

I've been to NYC a few times but never did this, so on my last trip, we decided to take this over to Roosevelt Island.

It's $5 RT using your MetroCard, and I didn't feel it was worth it. The ride over is very short - but I guess it's kind of cool that you can get an aerial view of NYC that you can't get anywhere else.

The island itself is extremely boring. There isn't anything to do there! The views are not that great (and facing the other way, you get a beautiful view of a power plant!) We got off the tram and walked around the park, snapped a few pics, shrugged our collective shoulders and headed back to the tram. Not worth the time or the expense.

If you're going here for the "views", skip this and head to Brooklyn Bridge Park.

$2.50 each way unless you have 7 day unlimited MetroCard, worth the cost as the views are great. Take some time to explore the island, especially the southern point which has both the old smallpox hospital and Roosevelt memorial. The views of eastern midtown and upper east side are wonderful. If you have time walk along the river north of the tram in the residential area as well.

We saw the aerial tram and gave it a try. The trip is about 5 minutes across. ($2.50 each way) and then we hopped on the red bus ( free) which drove us around the island ( not much of anything to see) and returned by the tram. Killed about 45 minutes and was different, we had never even heard of Roosevelt Island.

Our hotel was pretty much right next to the tram so we saw it moving along all day long... on our last day in NY we decided to give it a go and for $2.50 (via MetroCard) it was definitely worth a shot! I am not very comfortable with heights and things that move in the air so I sat on the bench holding on whilst the other half took a load of pictures. Views were great and the island itself is an experience. Definitely go and see the Roosevelt memorial on the south end of the island!
