“A great night out in NYC”

We love live music and especially 'soul' so we scoured the Internet to find a club in NYC that would suit two visitors from the UK. Found this place and went to the open mic night one Sunday.
We booked in advance (essential). Arriving at 8.45pm, there was already a queue. The fascinating mix of tourists, locals, students and singers (plus supporters) set the tone for the evening - and this was outside the club!
Once inside, you are seated and you can order food/ drinks. If you are a couple, you will end up sharing a table. If you're 4 or more, probably not. The show kicked off with a new singer every few minutes. Style - mainly soul but the occasional person did blues and some acoustic stuff. Everyone was great and our iPhones filled up with videos. The audience were up for it all and very supportive. By the way, they say this is the best house band in NYC. As an amateur myself - I agree. They guys really can play anything just from hearing a few notes. No sheet music, no pre- warning. They just jam along with anything. Great.
There's no dance floor (at least not when we went) but feel free to nod along and express yourself any other way you like.
For the $15 cover, this was one of the best value nights out you can have. It's a 2 drink minimum - but that's not an issue if you are from the UK.
Like all these clubs, don't expect luxury or a picturesque venue - but do expect a great night out and a well organised show. If you are visiting from the UK and aren't sure - think Camden and the Jazz Cafe (but more intimate). Have a great time.

I was in NYC for a girls' trip the first weekend in May, and we hit the Village Underground on that Friday night. We started with some laughs at the Comedy Cellar (same building, same room, so convenient) and stayed for the live music. It was phenomenal. The house band was talented, fun and energetic and played tunes for a variety of ages and tastes (Thriller/Could You Be Loved Mashup, Amy Winehouse, Aerosmith). The crowd was really diverse and fun. There are a million things to do in NYC, but I would head back here in a heartbeat.

I had my birthday party here in March. We arrived from Europe and it was worth it. The club has great atmosphere and excellent band.

Entertainment at this little underground lounge/bar was absolutely amazing! The band was brilliant (they could pretty much play ANY song you want) and the singers that signed up to perform that night when we went (it was open mic session) were also fantastic! My bf and I got there at 10pm, which was just when the show started but there were alrdy no more seats. We had to stand the entire time by the stairwell and got pushed back the more ppl came. It wasn't a huge problem until this miserable server (petite size caucasian girl, short hair, her name is Daisy i think) was getting irritated by either her job or the crowd and she pretty much took it out on us. She started spilling her drinks everywhere on her tray (not purposely on us, but more like she didn't care as she walked through) and near the end, she told us off. (Quote: "GUYS!! I HAVE BAD KNEES OKAY?!?? I NEED A CLEAR PATH TO WALK THROUGH AND THIS IS NOT WORKING! YOU GUYS HAVE TO MOVE!!!") So the night was good until this rude server told us off. Mind you, there was NO WHERE ELSE to move to, we were in that area first before others started pushing us out and there were no seats by the bar (as in they dont' even have bar stools there for u). And u can't see the stage from back there anyways. By then, the band was off for intermission and we just decided to leave since it was getting late anyways. Bouncer asked us how it went and we briefly told him and he insisted the manager to speak w us. Told the manager and he seemed to just brush it off and said "oh, we tell people to move all the time". Didn't even apologize.

Bottom line: Great entertainment, amazing band....but service needs some improvement. (Your bar is packed b/c of the entertainment, so don't take it for granted and give people bad service; how about putting some chairs by the bar so ppl have somewhere to stand or move to when your miserable server tries to tell us to get out of the way??)

Love the VU - as a Manhattan resident for ~7 years now and tired of the posh scene in seceral areas in the city, I love bringing friends here that want a taste of good live music and a great time. Can get a little crowded and the prices are on par with the village. Expect a cover ranging from $10-20 depending on the night, but well worth it!
