We called in here by chance as had just been to Marie's Crisis Bar next door. It was brilliant. We were given bar stools at the front where the jazz musicians were just setting up. We had such a brilliant time listening to Georgia Brown belting out familiar and new songs. She encouraged a bit of dancing. Amazing night . No cover charge so a tub was passed around for tips for the musicians. Give generously as they are truly brilliant.

Actually, this place is my guilty pleasure: I always spend at least one evening here whenever I'm in NY. It's changed over the years, but is about as authentic a place as you can get. No pretensions whatsoever. When I first started coming here it was a bar where the musicians who worked on Broadway shows, etc., would come and wind down by jamming with each other after work. If you wanted to hear 50 minute versions of 'Voodoo Chile', played by the most brilliant guitarists you'd never heard of, this was the place. Then they built a stage and started operating a more formal policy of booking 'acts', including resident acts (Sweet Georgia Brown being one). So some of the quirky randomness has gone, but it is still a great, unique place. The waitresses are always fantastic: they are very sassy and tolerate no messing around. My favourite drink is their version of Long Island Iced Tea which, the way they make it, is sheer knock-out juice. Trust me, you won't want to leave. I never do.

I'll tell you straight. Arthur's is pretty cool. Live music, great atmosphere, lots of people.....but that's the main problem is THERE ARE TOO MANY PEOPLE. They should make a limit. They let too many in so that it's really hard for you to enjoy the great place. That is my only complaint. I could only bear the shoulder to shoulder crowd for about 15 minutes.

Arthur's Tavern is the right place for a couple of drinks and some music. The place is a bit worn down, Christmas lights all year around. But staff is friendly and prices are reasonable.

From its battered diagonal-oak floor to its black-painted ceiling to the year-round Christmas decorations in between, there's no pretension, no irony, no signs of creeping fabulousness in this old Greenwich Village joint. If these walls could talk, someone would probably try to kill them.

Besides its funky decor, Arthur's offers no food, and so-so drinks. Drop in for top-quality jazz and blues most nights from 7 till closing time, and excellent people watching.

Pianist Eri Yamamoto's trio has played the early shift at Arthur's just about every Thursday through Saturday for well over a decade. Her musicianship and her deceptively simple original compositions are on par with what you'd have to pay a steep cover charge to hear nearby.

Arthur's doesn't always attract a listening crowd, so try to sit up front.
Those so-so drinks aren't inexpensive--$10 for a glass of Yellowtail. But there's no cover charge, the music is excellent and the atmosphere is unique.
