Hours of Operation: 8:00 AM - Midnight, last elevator goes up at 11:00 PM.Main entrance is located on 50th Street between 5th & 6th Avenues.

I did the observation deck of the Empire State Building on my first morning in NYC and was disappointed with the lack of visibility and how crowded it was on the observation deck (5 people deep to get to the edge to take a photo). I ended up going to the Top of the Rock that same night and it took my breath away.

Thankfully I'd managed to make the last elevator up and there was hardly anybody there so I had the luxury of taking my time to get my shots (lots of great panoramics), especially the obligatory selfies which are a necessity when you travel alone!

Whilst I understand the appeal of the Empire State (and lets face it you can't visit NYC without going there), Top of the Rock is definitely my recommendation for nighttime viewing :-)

3 levels to view the City from all angles. A block from where we stayed. It's a very fast elevator ride up 67 floors.

This was really not worth the $25. Waited in line, finally herded into an elevator. The elevator ride was cool, as it had a clear roof, with a lighted shaft so you can see it going up. However, once at the top....nothing much. Tiny balcony, very crowded. Empire State Building was much nicer venue.

Brilliant observation deck. My advise would be to go to the Empire State Building in the day to see the fantastic skyline in the day. Then, go to The Top of The Rock at night time, that way you can see the Empire State building all lit up at night.
