“Great stay”
Reviewed 7 January 2014

I really wasnt expecting much after the reviews. So thats probably why I was pleasantly surprised, I found new york was clean, people were friendly and this hotel room was bigger and nicer than i expected. I found this hotel had the perfect location, I could walk around everywhere, and easily to many attraction sites/areas. The bathroom seemed old and not that nice but had really nice toiletries. The beds were terrific. The one thing I thought was odd was that there was really no restaurant to eat at... I didnt really like that. Room service was from the cafe, i didnt realize it would be, was not good at all so dont waste your money. I did love the pizza/bar place down the street, it had 2 for 1 martinies, it was a fun place to hang out. The pizza was great and the drinks were really strong. I would def. recommend that place. Overall if the price was right I would stay at this hotel again. But if prices were the same I would try to pick a newer place with restaurants.

Room Tip: go to the 2 for 1 martini place down the road towards central park.

We have stayed at this hotel on several occasions, the last being for several days right after Christmas 2013. Even though the hotel was very busy, staff were helpful and anxious to please. The location is fantastic so that visitors are just a few blocks from shopping, Times Square, the Theater District and Rockefeller Center. Did not eat at the restaurant for breakfast since the lines were long, but found several places to eat within a short walk. Highly recommend this hotel

We've stayed at this hotel a couple of times over the past few years but it seems to have taken a fairly dramatic downturn. The location remains its strong point which should give the private equity owners all the more reason to raise the standard at what was once a flagship property (albeit in the 60s and 70s). As it currently stand the hotel is a pale shadow of a normal Hilton property and cannot be compared to for example the London Park Lane or even the London Heathrow Airport Terminal 4 Hilton (I'm serious). For New York Midtown not closely to compete with those locations seems odd to say the least.
The hotel doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. The lobby has the impression of a full service Hilton but it fades rapidly from there. This location is the home of a new concept roll-out of a small cafe store replacing the restaurants and room service options (though it can be delivered to the room). It is advertised as a grab-and-go venue to satisfy the needs of busy guests with a stylish open kitchen environment. Well lets hope they put a swift end to this sad and depressing experiment or the PE fund multiple return on brand sale has to be at risk - it was truly terrible. Basically a small area of the hotel with very few staff trying to serve a very small selection of overpriced (allowing for NYC location) foil wrapped fast food products. The long lines to each of the two servers each morning were guaranteed to provide a down beat start to each day and allow 15-20 minutes if you need to queue to buy something there. It looks like an experiment in staff cutting versus the previous ok restaurant that was on site (in other locations Hilton can figure out how to truly run a decent and seemingly profitable food service with rave reviews).
To avoid a long negative review let me just add that the rooms were worn and contained few amenities (no in-room mini bar or coffee maker... Hence the continued attempt to push you to the new grab and go service). The elevator service was very unreliable. At least once day we would have to exit an elevator for acting strangely which is never fun when you are on the 21st floor. All-in-all it was a very confusing experience and I stay in Hiltons often (including the Heathrow one two nights before arriving here). It simply needs to be shut down for a full refit and to reopen to the a standard fitting the potential of the location.

We have been here nine days now. Originally planned for seven days but have found it impossible to get home because of weather. Our stay has been great. All three rooms we have stayed in ( one for seven days and two others one night each because of having to return from the airport) have been great, and we are still here. (Though the unrenovated rooms are not as pleasant-- there is only so much you can do with old--all of our rooms have been renovated and nice). My only complaint is the fact that no one will answer the phone. You can call the operator or the concierge and let it ring for twenty rings or more and never get an answer. If you do get the operator (Candy is great!) the desk won't answer. But, you go downstairs you find that there are few, if any guests waiting or being served, several front desk people but apparently they do not like to answer the phone. They are always pleasant when you talk to them face to face so perhaps they just have an aversion to answering the phone. Even considering the fact that our stay has been unavoidably extended, it has been a lovely stay...except for the lack of phone response.

Room Tip: Ask for renovated room if available

Stayed here in early December. Fantastic location for Radio City, Trump Tower, Grand Central etc all within walking distance.
This is a big hotel and constantly busy and noisy. Expect to queue for most services especially coffee from the cafe/shop at the rear of the ground floor but it's worth it as is their pizza! Our room was adequate size and clean as you'd expect from Hilton.
The bar areas are extremely busy and service was very slow to the extent they brought us 1 of 2 drinks and never came back despite 3 reminders!
The one thing that really put me off about this Hilton was it charged you per item of luggage for storage. Bags were piled high in reception area at the back of the concierge desk bit of a rip off if you are a family with lots of bags who have a few hours before departure.
All in all I wouldn't stay here again as much prefer the Millennium Hilton in the Financial District which although smaller does have a pool and a more personal touch

the hotel is old, bathrooms are dirty, hallways are noisy (you can easily listen to the room next to you), and most of the staff are rude. the only one good thing is the coffee place on the lobby, but in morning queues are long and the staff is SO rude.

My husband and l and 2 children stayed at the Hilton Midtown for 7 nights over the new year period. It is a fantastic location that can't be beat in New York. Within walking distance to Times Sq, Central Park, Rockerfellar and 5th Avenue and many subways close by. We were checked in by a wonderful man who helped me with some queries l had. The only complaint l have was the line up each morning for breakfast, whether grab'n'go or dining. One morning we waited in line for half an hour to be told that they had to cut service off. Would have been nice to have been told this before we started waiting. Apart from this i would definitely recommend the hotel to my family and friends and we will certainly stay there next time we are in New York.

Thank you for your review of the hotel. Glad to hear that the location worked for your stay and you enjoyed your visit. We are very disappointed to hear that the grab and go service was halted during your stay. We are addressing this issue internally to determine why this happened.
