“Great hotel!”
Reviewed 2 July 2012

We have stayed at Hotel Mela twice while we were in NYC. The first time, two years ago we received a tray of goodies (chocolate covered strawberries, cookies, cheese, drinks, etc) because I mentioned it was our anniversary. We just stayed there again this past weekend for our fifth anniversary and when we arrived to check-in, we found out that we had been upgraded to the penthouse! The rooms both times we stayed were very clean, and the staff at the hotel is helpful in whatever you may need. I highly recommend this hotel for your stay in New York City!

This was my first trip to NYC, so we wanted something close to Times Square and all the other tourist stops. Hotel Mela was fantastic! We were within walking distance to almost everything. I purchased a Travel Zoo deal in March, which provided us with an upgraded room, 2 welcome drinks at The Long Room bar next door, and breakfast each morning at Saju Bistro (on the other side of the hotel).

Room: Our room was on the 16th floor; therefore we were not affected by any outside noise. Although the room wasn't the largest I've stayed in, there was plenty of room for both of us and our luggage. The ammenties were fantastic. However, beware that the snack-bar and mini-fridge in the room works on a sensor. If something is removed, you are automatically billed. We did not have a problem with this though since we brought our own snacks. ***Make sure you sign up for the Hotel Mela Desires program before checking in. The service provides you with drinks and snacks of your choice the day you check in. Please note that these items are delivered to your room and not given to you at check-in.

Food: While not a huge selection to choose from since we had free breakfast passes, the food was good and filled us up.

Location: The location of this hotel was perfect. My husband and I are pretty active, so we walked almost everywhere, but if you needed public transportation, it was right there.

We were very happy with this hotel and would return in the future.

Yes, the rooms are small...it's NYC, however. My granddaughter and I had a King room with a street view (44th) and found it exciting to be able to look right outside of the front of the hotel. There is a little street noise since we were only on the second floor but we are both sound sleepers so it did not matter! We loved the location since we went to three shows during our stay and we loved that the action in Times Sq was just a block away. The Theatre District, Empire State Bldg, Rockefeller Ctr, world renowned shopping...all within minutes walking distance. The Saju Bistro is excellent for your breakfasts..get the package...cute sidewalk cafe style, clean and excellent food. Very comfortable beds...GREAT experience...I will stay there again!

Room Tip: Request King with street view

I was staying here during my first visit to NYC. And it was great location for the first time. Quite small room was very nice but i had no city view at all, only another wall so the room remained very dark even in sunny days.

My husband and I stayed for 4 days in May and my daughter and I stayed for 4 days in May. We were visiting another daughter who is studying in New York. We bought packages on Travelzoo that included a full breakfast at the Saju Bistro next door and drinks at the pub on the other side next door. The breakfasts were excellent quality and dinner at both the Bistro and the pub were reasonably priced, tasty with excellent service. By joining the hotel's loyalty club, we also received an amenity on arrival. The rooms include a coffee maker with quality coffee and teas. The location is great for theatre goers but the Time Square proximity can be overwhelming. The rooms - deluxe queen and deluxe twin were small and took some getting used to and there was no view. We would stay again without hesitation provided we could obtain a reasonable package.

We stayed five nights in early June; booked through Expedia. The room is small, but I expected this, having compared the square footage to other rooms in NYC; however, I think small hotel rooms are pretty much the norm in NYC. Our room, a Superior Queen, was very comfortable and clean, a/c and plumbing worked fine. We were on third floor in the back so had no view, but also no street noise whatsoever. The location was great, just a half-block from Times Square and walking district from Grand Central Station, Rockefeller Plaza, Central Park, Fifth Avenue stores, etc. I would definitely stay here again.

Stayed 7 nights in a Superior Queen. Saw three different rooms during the process, so this is a review you can rely on.
Good: Location around corner from Times Square and within walking distance of subway, delis, broadway shows, restaurants, etc. Except for carpeting, room was sparking clean for us. H2O shampoo, conditioner and lotion is fabulous. Filtered water available in workout room to fill water bottles before going out for the day. Safe in room is a good size. Paper in lobby is free. Free coffee in lobby, if you don't mind them mentioning to you that there is a coffee shop nearly when you go to get it. Apples in lobby and workout room for breakfast each morning. Quiet at night except for in-room air conditioning unit. I inspected each room for bed bugs which is a problem in NYC (and other sites have Hotel Mela on the list of hotels that have had the problem) and found none. Staff friendly or indifferent (never rude).

Bad: Housekeeping stole phone charging cords from room at first opportunity. Good thing we locked in safe all other electronics. When reported to front desk, was told housekeeping does not take things from rooms. On many occasions lukewarm water was all that was available for shower/bath. Carpet in each room filthy. They do not like customers that booked outside their own web site. Take your booking printouts to prove you are entitled to a queen bad, superior room, etc. Even then, expect the smallest room you can imagine. First room (room 719) had a double bed and smelled very bad, when paid for a queen. After discussion, upgraded to a queen bed (room 519) with about a foot around sides of bed and no smell. Absolutely nowhere to get in luggage, eat a snack, etc., except on bed so might want to have linens changed during your stay (place card on bed). Flight cancelled and had to stay another night after checkout. No discount for having stayed six nights already. Third room (room 308) had an extra foot of space around bed, which makes a difference. There are blackout curtains, so search for them behind regular curtains. You will need them if on the inside because room windows face each other. The view from most any room will be a unkept brick wall with missing bricks, pigeon droppings. The third room had an upgraded view of a running HVAC unit with mops and debris around it, and the added value of extra white noise. Of course, hotel is not as nice as the pictures. Lobby is tiny. Besides the theft, the hardest part is that when you return from a long day, the room is tiny and there is nowhere else to go in the hotel to unwind (no pool, sauna, whirlpool, lobby or public area, bar, etc.) If the price is right and traveling with no kids, I could recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: You are not going to get a "good room" at this hotel. Read my review. This is just a place...
