“Great Location,Average Hotel”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2014

Visited New York for a vacation....Hotel was below average of our Expectations, front desk was very small.....hotel lobby was very tiny, but at least better than our room,I liked sitting in lobby than in my ultimate tiny room...room hardly had space to accommodate our two luggage,we booked our room from hotwire, and got the tiniest room of the hotel, room was hot and humid as AC won't go below 65 and no windows for fresh air.bathroom and shower just added to our discomfort being very very small.Just the good thing was location.

Absolutely loved this hotel! I am very picky when it comes to hotels/service and I would give this hotel an A+. The staff was helpful and friendly (shoutout to front desk employee Ivan - he went out of his way several times to make our stay extra special). Location is perfect (just a minute walk or so from Times Square). Rooms were quiet, comfortable, clean and modern (on the smaller side - but that is common in NY). Hotel is well kept in general. The Bistro next door was a perfect place to start your day. Would definitely stay here again! Thank you Hotel Mela!

Good location opposite a broadway theatre with a star autograph signing session after the show most nights. Half a block from Times Square, close to Rockefeller Center and 5th Avenue shopping! "Superior" ie standard room very small, even for a british traveller, but deluxe room is spacious. Comfortable beds in pretty rooms. Usable though basic fitness room.

Adjoining bistro looked nice & had an interesting menu but there is a choice of cheaper & tasty breakfasts and superlative dinners within a block in every direction.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking 44th street if you don't want to look out on an ugly light well. Ask...

Everything about the Mela was terrific. Location is perfect, 44th St., between 6th and 7th Ave. The staff was very friendly and helpful, the room comfortable and spotlessly clean. Breakfast at the bistro next door was included, and the food was delicious but the menu restricted to eggs or pastries. All in all, a terrific experience at a very reasonable price. I will recommend the Mela to friends and will happily stay there again if I am staying in Manhattan for one or more nights.

Night one-room smell is horrendous. Open window to air out, window pane comes out. Hang breakfast menu on door at 10 pm. It was not picked up.
Night two-phoned room service and notified of late breakfast due to hotel not picking up the menu...was promised breakfast in 15 min. Half hour later phoned to check on late delivery. Was told room number was not taken down. Moved to new room. Air conditioning out. Repairman comes while out to dinner. Return room is cool and step onto wet carpet. Night three-new room. Upgraded by hotel management. No internet service in the room due to signal. Espresso machine's water container had dirt that could be scraped with your finger which was indicative of the cleanliness of the rooms.
This was my third and last stay in spite of the great proximity to theatre, offices, and my appreciation of boutique hotels.

Room Tip: Thin walls!

We arrived at Hotel Mela at 1 a.m. after traveling for almost 24 hours, to find that the staff had sold our room to another guest despite this being prepaid. The receptionist did ring around and eventually found us another room in a lesser hotel. Finding a taxi at that hour took time so we eventually got to bed at 3a.m.

The next day Hotel Mela did give us an upgraded room and complimentary breakfasts. We would rather have had our room on the 1st night. The room we were upgraded to was clean and the bed was comfortable. The staff were pleasant and helpful.

We suggest that if you are going to use this hotel that you phone the day before arrival to make sure that they do not sell your room to someone else.
