This is not a five star hotel. I would say four stars is the most this property deserves, although they would like to (and do) charge a greater than deserved room rate which should equate to a better experience. Location is convenient to the Central Park, Times Square, Fifth Avenue and other midtown destinations. This is my first time staying at The London, as most of Manhattan seemed very busy and it was a late booking on my part. I stayed there on July 22nd and 23rd.
When checking in late in the day, I was shocked to see three separate breakfast room service trays remaining outside the rooms at 4:30 in the afternoon. When I left for dinner at 6:30pm, they were still there in the hallway. Were they really there all day?
Being up high was nice, but the views were primarily of other tall buildings looking right back at you. There was a sliver of the park peaking through, being on the 42nd floor. It was quiet and I did not notice any noise issues all night.
I think it is an all “suite” hotel. I was in what they call The London Suite. Kind of funky furniture in the rooms, just odd looking pieces, like a mauve velvet kidney bean shaped sofa way too far from the smallish TV and a sea of hardwood floor without any area carpet or charm whatsoever. Maybe it was supposed to be a small dance floor. It was not a room you wanted to hang out in. While there was a functional desk area the desk chair was decidedly uncomfortable as it had a deep, curved back and you never actually could slide back in it. I would have preferred a Fit ball to that chair, or get a serious desk chair like an Aeron.
On the plus side, they give you free wireless internet access and plenty of convenient electrical outlets.
Light switches were in odd locations (not right by the doorway or by the end of the hallway, for example) and it proved hard to get the room lit properly without walking all around the room to find the light switches and turn on desk lamps, floor lamps and so forth. I did like the fact that all the drapes and sheers in the room were electronically operated from adjacent wall switches. That was a huge plus because there are a lot of windows in the room.
There was only one thermostat in a two room suite such that is is hard to control the temperature in both rooms when one room is warmer than the other. In the bedroom, the air conditioning duct is just above the door, directing the cold air right to the top of the bed, so you have air blowing on your face all night long.
The bathroom is generously sized, and while it is a large walk in shower (with shower heads on both ends of the rectangular shower), it looked a bit worn, sort of like the showers in gym during high school. It was only a single sink, but there was ample counter space surrounding it.
I did not try the gym or take advantage of the spa.
Staff is very pleasant and check in process was effortless.
Only tried the restaurant for breakfast on two separate occasions. Breakfast is certainly not something that Gordon Ramsay has anything to do with at The London. It has the perfunctory buffet, nothing special. But if you want to order off the menu, expect lackadaisical staff. It was hard for them to even bring decaf coffee for one of my guests - nearly 10 minutes to get a cup of coffee. And then to get the check was a challenge. My sense is that they expect everyone to take advantage of the buffet so are not accustomed to actually serving people.
