Reviewed 31 January 2012

I was surprised here since this was a business trip. The desks were too small to be able to work there. Also, the internet did not function and I had to spend more than a half an hour with the helpdesk myself just to get a connection set up, though I had no specific problems with my laptop. Telephone also needed to be fixed by the handyman as something was wrong in the phone itself. The heaters keep the room warm enough, but lots of noise on start-up and since it was blown from the box, there was a 10 degree difference from the floor to the bed level. But, in any case, Ithe sleep was fine. Breakfast was edible, but the quality of the eggs and sausage was readily noticed as not top! There was sufficient quantity, though, and the pancake maker was efficient enough. One Elevator was out for 2 days, which meant all the clean up and maintenace crews competed with the clients for space on the lifts. There was a safe at the front desk, which I appreciated greatly so I didn't need to carry passports, etc., around all the time in the city.

The hotel is good value for what it is - a typical tourist hotel. However it has all the amenities one would need. Its really close to subway and train stations and a stones throw from Madison Square Garden, Macy's and Empire State Building - to mention just a few of the typical tourist destinations. Breakfast is a do-it-yourself buffet in the lobby - nothing special but good enough to start the day with -toast, muffins, pancakes (industrial from a machine), and some hot foods like scrambled eggs, sausages and porridge. There is free coffee / tea all day too in the lobby. I would stay there again if I was sight seeing in NY. If I wanted some luxury I would choose something a bit more pricy.

Room Tip: as high up as possible on the front of the building - view of top of Empire State Building.

Stayed here last night Jan 24/2012. Very clean room a little on the small side. OK sized bathroom. Exactly what we needed a clean place to sleep very good location. We had room 1214 on the front side of the hotel. I was a little loud around 6 AM. A few people playing musical horns. The front desk was more than helpful with direction and good places to eat.
It was appx. 5 min walk to MSG. 15 min to Times Square. Never took the bus or subway.
The A/C worked fine. Didnt use the heat. The free breakfast was good. Pancakes, sausage i think i saw eggs. Cereal juice etc. Overall very happy with my stay. I would recommened this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper maybe ask for a high floor room at the back.

I've read the reviews and the hotel was quite what we expected to be in size and quite new as we like.Breakfast pretty balanced and very practical especially during winter. Location is fabuloust to ride buses, trains and shopping. We stayed there for 7 days and it was crowdie just during weekend, but we got up early and slept very well, despite the door locker.

Room Tip: Bedroom is small so unless you need a big bed, choose a queen size.

Like most hotels in this class in NYC, the rooms are small. However, they are VERY clean, which is nice for hotels in NYC. The hotel itself is pretty nice, though when I stayed one of the 2 elevators was broken, meaning long waits to get up to the room and back down to the lobby. The breakfast area, as other as noted, is a bit small, but I had no problems getting a table early (7 AM). When I checked out around 8 AM, it was pretty full. Breakfast was average, but it's included which is a nice tough. I was surprised how noisy my room was, even though I faced an inner courtyard, the sounds of NYC still invaded the room. Location wise, this is close to Madison Square Garden, but it's a bit of walk to other NYC attractions (though the subway is close by). All in all, not a bad hotel, but not great either.

Room Tip: Try to get a high floor (assuming the elevators are working)

We arrived in NYC on the busiest Saturday of the holiday season. The crowds were amazing and the room prices were extremely high. I chose the HIEx because it was close to Penn Station (we flew into Newark) and the morning breakfast. Be advised: do not follow the hotel site directions from Penn Station. There are many one way streets and the directions are clearly for drivers. They need to update the info and give walking directions from Penn Station. It was the most circuitous trip imaginable. We had to leave our bags and check in later in the day. The room was small but fine. We actually slept quite well. There were two problems. All the room doors seemed to have problems. The door did not seem to shut securely, and any door that closed did so with a loud slam. I questioned the room security, but I guess it was OK.
The breakfast room was unable to handle the overflow crowd. Both mornings we felt like hawks waiting for a table. The space does not in any way accomodate the number of people that stay at the hotel. The lines for breakfast backed up to the elevator and it was impossible to navagate the hotel lobby. The food was fine, but it was a stressful way to start long sightseeing days.
Desj staff was helpful and friendly. I appreciated the "gift" I received as a priority member.

Room Tip: We were at the back of the hotel and at the end of the hall; that may have contributed to our good n...

Dear Reviewer,
Thank you for taking the time from your day to share your experience at the Holiday Inn Express Madison Square Garden. We are saddened to see that your time with us was less than satisfying. We have updated our walking directions from Penn Station; we hope that this will fix any confusion it has caused in the past. It’s unfortunate that your room door during your stay was not working properly; it would have been our pleasure to rectify it immediately. In regards of our breakfast area, we are working to expand the area to make seating more comfortable and ease our busiest breakfast hours. We are glad to see that you enjoyed your Priority Club gift as it is one of the small items we like to provide to our most valued of guest. We hope that this experience does not thwart you from visiting NYC or the Holiday Inn Express Madison Square Garden. Thank you again for your comments; we hope you have an enjoyable day.

We stayed 3 nights at this hotel over the 2012 New Year weekend. It's off the beaten path...not far from Penn Station or other NY attractions.

Pros: clean and comfortable; great breakfast; pleasant staff...I would definitely stay again at a much lower rate :-). Easy check in/out; Allowed to check out late due to PC membership.

Cons: noise level is certainly a problem if other guest are loud. You can hear the doors close - they have the slam factor so, you will hear them closing as often as they are opened. Only one ice machine - lower level behind the breakfast area.

Overall a pleasant stay.
