“Perfect location, nice and cosy !”
Reviewed 17 May 2011

We were in New York for 4 days, just to check out the city, have a feel of it etc...we travelled with our 2 and a half year-old daughter, so we were looking for a place close to everything by foot, safe, cosy and a suite, so when she goes to bed, we can still have a chat and a drink in the lounge without waking her up...At the Roger Smith Hotel, we found just that...we stayed in room 311, and to our surprise, not only the suite was very spacious , comfortable and cozy, but there was also an extra smaller bedroom , which was perfect to fit a crib in there for her, and not have to disturb her sleep when we went to bed later in the evening...
Location is superb, if one is used to walk, all is nearby, Central Park,5th and Madison ave, Rockefeller center, Times Square, Broadway theater district, a short cab ride away to the main ferries etc...
There is no room service, but a nice little cafe downstairs that you can order food from and take it up to your room, or quite a few cafes and delis right on Lexington avenue...After all, this is NYC, food is all around !

The only thing my husband and I were disappointed in, was the babysitting service...:
on the saturday, we planned to go and watch a musical in Broadway ( prepaid tickets), and as such, i called the hotel 10 days earlier to book a babysitter for the night...
We booked from 7pm to 11pm, and at check-in, i did get a note to reconfirm the babysitting booking on that night...
At 0710pm, we were still waiting for somebody to turn up, i called reception and asked what was happening, after 10 mns, i got told they had the booking confused and thought it was for the following night...apparently, the mistake was the babysitting agency, not the hotel...so they could still get somebody there after a half hour wait, which wasn't good enough as our show started at 0800 pm...
That was the only frustrating part, especially as the gentleman at reception ( i won't mention his name) was quite rude and didn't seem to understand my disappointment, he never once apologised, luckily we dealt with the manager on duty later on, that was very nice, and kept an eye on our sleeping daughter for us, while we were away...
I just need to mention that my daughter is a sound sleeper, 12 hours a night, so it kind of worked out, but if she wasn't, or needed to be entertained, we would have missed the show and lost $500 worth of tickets...
So to you parents who plan to stay at the Roger Smith, do reconfirm again that a babysitter is coming, even one hour before you leave...just in case...

This is a great hotel to stay at. Nice rooms. Very good location. Fairly close to Grand Central Terminal. Good value for the location. Staff is very attentive. This was the second time we stayed here.

I used to like this euro-centric - mostly small country Europe for some reason - hotel, but less so now. It has been renovated. Bathrooms are very nice, rooms funky 'British library' style. But front desk at night is an excruciatingly slow one man no-show and even during the day check in is understaffed and slow. And the manager (?) was found hanging in the bar. Internet is slow and not very stable. There's better in the same price range, so only at a real discount...

We booked the most expensive room type: the "deluxe suite", and paid more than $500 per night, only to find out we just could not sleep there... In their web site, they don't tell you that on the near-by roof, just against the suite's window, there are giant air-condition engines, making terrible noise 24/7. After a sleepless night we were offered ear plugs... When we changed toom to a higher floor, the noise was still there (just like while flying a jet plane), but at least we could sleep.
Take into account that there is actually no lobby in this old and tiny hotel, so if you want to meet your friends - find another meeting point.
If you don't feel like paying $30 per person for breakfast - skip the hotel restaurant. there are other options in the vicinity.
Try to take your shower before the other guests do; otherwise, you will have to do it quickly, getting cold water, like I did in our first night.
But the location was good, and the staff were nice - especially Sophie, who did her best to improve our bad experience with this hotel.

I would love to compliment the Roger Smith Hotel on having exceptional staff.
In particular, Randy, Omar and Jim!
They went over and above and beyond any expectations that I had.
They were also extremely helpful and helped to make my stay great!
Randy especially had excellent banter and was more than willing to help everyone at all times!!!

This hotel is a gem among the sterile big hotels that seem to dominate in Manhattan. Big, clean rooms, very friendly staff, and very comfortable beds at a reasonable price add up to a very good experience.
