We booked through price line for a last minute hotel needed for the city. We had tickets to Jimmy Fallon for the next day. Location, location, location. Grand Central Terminal was about four blocks away. Hotel was right on Lexington in prime location. Everyone from the front desk to the bell man were gracious. They had the most comfortable beds I had ever slept in. Bathroom was spacious and updated. Room was spotless. Free wifi and a diner next door and a great place across the street for pizza slices. This was a hidden gem and will always stay here.

The strongest two aspects of this hotel are the service and value. My wife and I stayed with our three young kids and had our share of special requests which the staff was always very willing to accommodate. In fact, after we left, we realized we had left a bag with some purchases made on the trip. We contacted Jose, one of the staff members, who found our items, packed them, and shipped them from the post office. If you have stayed in NY, you know this kind of service is not the norm.

We stayed in one of the corner rooms which had two double beds and a nice amount of space. The room was in good condition, not new, but well maintained. Price was reasonable for midtown Manhattan and was almost certainly lower than neighboring 4- and 5-star places.

I stayed at the Roger Smith hotel for 5 nights over the weekend and mid-week in November 2011 travelling for work. The hotel is centrally located in Manhattan, close to the Chrysler building and Central Station in a district with some upmarket hotels nearby. The staff at the hotel are friendly and helpful but often spoke Spanish in front of the guests when discussing a guest query-which is a bit off putting as you didn’t know what they were saying. The room I stayed in was large at the rear of the hotel, as I was assured this was the quiet side of the building. The hotel is generally very noisy. Firstly because all rooms on the 'quiet' side of the hotel have adjoining doors to the next room with no noise proofing between rooms. Generally you feel like you are sleeping in the same room as your neighbours and could hear everything. Also, the windows leak in as lot of noise; from the large air conditioning units of the neighbouring building to every police siren or car horn on the street below can be heard all night. The room itself had a large and comfortable bed, nice linen, coffee and TV facilities and a large TV. There was also free wireless internet which was useful. The decor was a bit tired and the carpet dirty-felt like you didn’t want to walk on the carpet in socks. The bathroom was large by New York standards with a bath and shower, nice toiletries provided. This hotel would be fine as a low 3 star hotel if it wasn’t for the noise problem. It really is quite impossible to get a good night’s sleep and is not recommended for business travellers or light sleepers. I left the hotel feeling exhausted after nearly a week of no sleep.

Room Tip: If you have to stay in this hotel bring ear plugs

This place feels less like a hotel and more like someone's home - staying there is like staying with an old friend - a slightly eccentric, idiosyncratic old friend I have to admit, but a welcoming, hospitable one nonetheless. The staff were invariably helpful and pleasant, the room was extremely comfortable and in no way corporate or "off-the-peg" and the food in the restaurant was terrific, while the location was ideal for sightseeing and cultural visits. If you want somewhere special and out of the ordinary to stay in central Manhattan, this is the place to go for.
