“Shabby chic meets shabby.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 September 2012

I was in town for business for a few days and was given one of the suites. A huge space for one, with living room, dining room, bedroom with ensuite and closet kitchen.

But there's a reason why you get such a large space for not that much money. The place needs really needs a makeover. Whilst I loved the photography and art in my suite, the peeling paint and ramshackle appearance in general was pretty average. It doesn't need a complete makeover, just a little TLC.

The bar downstairs is a bit drab, and whilst they had a good couple of beers on tap, it really needs someone to inject some life into it. The restaurant was closed at the time, so couldn't comment.

So, I guess there's two ways of looking at it, if you want lots of space without spending a bomb, then it's great - but I do think that a little well apppointed maintenance could certainly help this place, even to maintain the shabby chic appearance.

We stayed at the Roger Smith over Labor Day weekend. The location warrants 5 stars, with great access to the Subway, shopping, and places to eat, but the hotel itself has much room for improvement.
At first glance, I hoped it was going to be a case of "shabby chic", but it turned out to be just shabby. The entire place needs work. The examples are endless.... peeling paint, chipped furniture, mold in the bathroom, stains on the carpet, uninterested staff (except Anna our housekeeper) and a weird moldy/musty smell. It was one of those places that I was afraid to walk barefoot on the hotel room. The lobby bar and restaurant was closed/mothballed. At least have a doorman!! Granted, it is an older hotel, but older does not have to equal worn out and sad!!

As an outsider, it looks to me that the owner needs to invest some time and money in the building, the staff and the amenities and then the Roger Smith could shine brightly on Lexington.

I was skeptical. We usually stayed at one of the big chain hotels in NYC, often using points because the city can be so expensive. But this time we were traveling with another couple and they balked at the big price tag of our usual hotel. My brother has stayed numerous times at the Roger Smith Hotel and has always been satisfied, so I reluctantly agreed to give it a try. Well, I have to admit that we've found a new hotel in the city! The Roger Smith is quiet, charming, nicely appointed and conveniently located. We found the front desk staff friendly and willing to offer travel advice. Yes, the decor is older and a bit worn, but that just adds to the charm ~ as long as it's clean. And yes, it was clean throughout. The bed was comfortable and the room was quiet. NYC has so much to offer that a visitor is rarely in the room anyhow. Why pay upwards of three times as much for a different hotel? We're trying the Roger Smith again this December and hope to have the same wonderful experience.

What can I say... We stayed here about 5 times and I just love it! Great staff, great location! All the rooms are different and have their own individual decoration. The first time we booked (travel agent forgot our request and) we got a queen bed room. Since we're used to two separate mattresses at home I went down to ask if there was some way to fix the 'problem', and without any trouble we we're switched to a double queen. Staff is more than willing to help and get you on your way in NY. Location is about 15 min. walk from Times Square so how much more central can you get. The hotel offers good value for money and I can recommed it to anyone. It felt like family away from home (and I mean the good kind :-)

Room Tip: A suite will get you a corner room and offers more floor space if you need it. Otherwise the 'no...

Have stayed a few times at the Roger Smith - knew someone that had worked there so it was convenient. Location is great - On 47th & Lexington, only a few blocks from Grand Central. The hotel is older, could use a little bit of updating, almost all over, but it's an older hotel, so you have to appreciate it's older beauty. We were able to get a corner suite with a deck. You have to stay at this place to appreciate it's beauty. Will I stay there again...for sure! It's just got old fashion charm!

A nice, slightly old-fashioned hotel in a very good location for New York attractions. Have stayed there twice. The first time we weren't terribly impressed with the room as all electrical sockets were fairly inaccessible. The hotel did, though, provide an extension cable, which helped.

This time (last week) the room was a big improvement. All sockets were easily accessible. However, the hotel doesn't really cater for international travellers as all sockets were for US plugs only. No universal sockets and if you did need to use adaptors, you could only use one at a time in a double socket.

Interesting that the hotel encourages you to wash and condition your hair and have clean, fresh smelling breath (in that it provides shampoo, conditioner and mouthwash) but seems content to allow the rest of your body go dirty (no body wash or shower gel provided)!

Decor is a little tired but the staff are helpful. Very frustrating and curious that the bar closes so early - 10.00 pm.

Nevertheless, we would stay there again.
