“Decent Enough”
Reviewed 28 April 2012

This was an adequate stay for a reasonable price.

The hotel is well situated on E 50th; across the street are both the Benjamin and Affinia 50, so others might want to try them for comparison.

There's nothing special about the property. The reception lounge is relatively small yet efficient. The executive room I took was ok, decent space, comfortable sofa and chairs, workable kitchen facilities - but not of a quality of a place like the Alex. Bathroom was small yet functional - ok water pressure and Aveda giveaways. Bed quality was fine.

Two gripes were the towels and the continental breakfast. The towels were so worn and thin that I thought their sandpaper-like quality might exfoliate my entire body without ever really drying it. Really, it was like a bad summer camp experience. And the continental breakfast was bland, cheap in quality and tasteless. The hotel management must have someone specifically picking up months supplies of huge quantities of nourishment at BJs or Walmart.

So, if you want that location (50th and 3rd) for a decent night's sleep, grab a discounted rate and avoid the breakfast. It's a decent enough place for a night or two (p.s. go get a breakfast bagel at Ess-A-Bagel and coffee across the street and don't even try to justify the embedded continental breakfast cost).

I just finished my fifth stay at this best kept secret in Manhattan on April 17-20 and the best thing about this hotel is the friendliness of is staff fom the concierge to the bellman (Bobby) to the check-in staff. They are all amazingly kind and well-informed. The rooms are very spacious with modern furnishings. The beds are ver comfortable. The heat and A/C work very well. The television reception on some of the stations in my room (#1009) could have been better bu this small factor is not severe enough to lower my rating of the hotel. It is in every possible way five star. The continental breakfast provided every morning with the cost of your room is fine. Best of all the location is excellent for every type of sightseeing you could want to do in Manhattan.

Overall a great place to stay, away from the crowd especially at Times Square. Highly recommended for families traveling with children. The only thing lacking is a self service laundry facility.

The first time I stayed at San Carlos Hotel I was 7 years old, in December 1971, almost 41 years ago. Since then I've stayed there for many times. After a complete renovation, it reopened still better, that's why every time I am in NY, my choice is the San Carlos Hotel, a lovely place, with nice and confortable rooms, warm staff and perfect location.

We just spent a few days in New York staying at the San Carlos. From the moment of arrival you could tell this was something different, something out of the ordinary.

The receptionist greeted us warmly, took time to ask about our trip and explain the facilities of the hotel. Now this could have been a one off, an employee on a good day, however we found all the staff to be uniformly friendly, informative and very helpful.

We had booked a one room suite and were pleased with the size of the room and its practicality. It comes with a microwave, mini fridge and a well proportioned living room. The room also had a good safe, free wifi and two large TV's. The hotel also provides a 'computer suite' on the second floor for guests consisting of 6 PC's and 2 Printers.

The hotel is in an excellent location for exploring the city with 2 subway stops within a couple of blacks, plenty of good restaurants in the area and it is within walking distance of Rockefeller and Central Parks.

Would definitely stay here on the next visit to New York.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the higher floors toward the back of the hotel.

After spending a night in another "big hotel", left there, came here. The staff was wonderful and most accomodating to our needs. I've stayed here 4 times now, and will never stay anywhere else. The front desk staff is phenominal to my wife and I. The place is roomy, quiet, and has all those amenities that make a great hotel. Do yourself a favor, stay here and enjoy NYC.

I have stayed here several times and each time am very pleased to be here. The multi-lingual, efficient and friendly staff is equally comfortable with English and non-English speakers and the number of non-American guests attests to this. Most of the rooms are good size with refrigerators and microwaves and coffee service. Very clean. Decor is subdued - nice calm after being in NYC. Continental breakfast is tasty with good pastries. Be sure to ask for the NY Times. Convenient for mid-town, close to several subways. Easy to get to Broadway.

Room Tip: Ask to NOT be on the air shaft if you want light. Although you may trade size for the exterior wind...
