Authentic elegant NY style building in excellent location. Close to subway, museums, restaurants & Central Park strolls. Quiet street at right angles to busy roads. Very helpful staff. Breakfast rather standard for the price. No free WIFI in rooms. No fridge in room but ice machines in corridor.
Well served by subway, buses & taxis/shuttles. We really enjoyed the convenience of our stay.

Room Tip: A balcony was a welcome addition.

We found the desk staff helpful and obliging. There was also a desk for booking entertainment and trips. Rooms were clean and tidy. No fridge in either of the rooms we stayed in. Access to the sight seeing was great. We were able to walk to Guggenheim, Natural History Museum, and Central Park. Subway is very handy. Walking to Columbus Avenue and Amsterdam Avenue for a variety of restaurants and bars, was worthwhile. Good choice of places to eat or takeaway. Air conditioning was slightly noisy but we were pleased with the cool air temperature in the room. Would stay here again.

The hotel is situated very close to Central Park, across the road from the Natural History Museum
(it was featured in the film "A Night At The Museum" when all the exhibits come alive at night)
and is about a 20 minute walk to times square.
The room was a bit tired looking but was OK. The bar only had bottled beers, but a fine selection.
The restaurant food was of a Mexican origin.

Check in was rather cold and dismissive, booked by Amtrack as part of a rail tour. Splendid old hotel all dark wood and polish except for the bathroom. It was kitted out in plastic rails & cheap towels. Nice location near Central Park. Used the Subway to go downtown, easy once you figure out the ticket system. One of the open top bus stops are nearby across from the Museum. Breakfast was served in the lovely library bur very expensive at $17 a head.

The Excelsior is superbly located away from the centre in a quiet location and guarantees a good nights sleep. The room was fine for the duration of our stay, never tried the breakfast as considered $17 per person very expensive when there were lots of places where a good breakfast could be bought for a lot less. Ideally situated for lovely walks through Central Park and the subway. The reception staff came across a little aloof & not particularly helpful or welcoming. The rooms were quite cold and we were told by the receptionist it was against the law in New York to have the heating on.
Overall would use again just because I liked the location.

Room Tip: Would recommend the Superior room if you are a family and happy to share a bedroom. There is a sep...

Loved the location of the hotel with loads of nice restaurants and cafes just round the corner. Used the hotel as a base to sleep but did not use any of the facilities. Would recommend for this purpose to anyone and close to subway, 30 mins walk to time square, nice walk if you go down Columbus ave

The upper west side of Manhattan is a beautiful part of the city. Its a more residential part of the city but still close to the noisier busier parts downtown. The hotel is very nice , situated right across from the great science museum and a small park. The streets are full of nice shops. We walked the 20 minutes to the Met. Its very easy to get around the city from here.

Its an older NY hotel with all spaces fairly small. It has a European feel of a welcoming boutique hotel. The room was small but very nice. It was quiet. The bed was excellent. The bathroom was remodeled and very nice. The view from our window was very nice and open to the wide expanse of downtown. There is a nice small park across the street. We bought some food down the street at Trader Joes and had a nice picnic in the evening.

The staff was very nice and helpful.

The price runs around 300-350/night. Its pricey but not out of line for new york.
