We stayed at The Excelsior from December 12-15, 2013. We weren't greeted by the front desk - we had to wait until he was finished typing on his computer - but we were upgraded to a superior room, so I can overlook that. The superior room had a sitting area connected to the bedroom by french doors. The view was of the back of a building; we didn't care about that, but if you want a pretty view you'll need to book a room that has one. The beds were very comfortable, and the size of the bedroom and bathroom were about on par with other places we've stayed, so that was good. Honestly, the ONLY thing that would have made this room absolutely perfect would have been a mini fridge and a coffee maker. There's a Starbucks about two blocks away, and Zabar's isn't far either, but still - it would've been nice to have a place to store our leftover cheesecake or a Coke or something. The location is great IF you're looking for something a bit quieter and close to the Museum of Natural History and Central Park. There's a subway station right around the corner, and it would take about 20 minutes to get to Midtown. If you're looking for something within close walking distance to Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and the tourist-y hustle and bustle, this hotel is NOT for you. I can't review the breakfast buffet, as we never ate there. But the restaurant in the lobby, Calle Ocho, is FANTASTIC. Just make sure you make your reservations EARLY! :)

The hotel is across from the Natural History Museum, close to Central Park and a couple of subway stations. There is a great restaurant "UNO's" down the street that has a wide variety of meal options and they also do delivery. On previous reviews I read about "Andy's Deli" saying how good it was and I can definitely confirm that. Although most New York hotels have small rooms, it is disappointing comparing the price to the value, pictures can be deceiving. The bathroom had a bit of mould and the towels and sheets would regularly have long black hairs in them. I had also requested an extra luggage rack (3 times) and was never given one so I eventually gave up asking. A fridge is an extra $10.00 a day for your room but is worth it if you aren't going anywhere for breakfast (this is where "Andy's Deli" comes in handy). Also the wifi is an additional cost and quite expensive, however there is free wifi in the lobby and on the 2nd floor (however it can be an inconvenience). It would have been nice to have had tea and coffee facilities in our room. As we were there a week I needed some washing done, I used "P & K Laundromat". They are extremely cheap and pick up and deliver your washing to you at the hotel. They also do dry cleaning but as they took a couple of days and we didn't have time I used the hotels service and their prices were quite reasonable. Both being same day service. Overall the hotel was ok, but our next visit we will reconsider where we stay.

Nice reception staff and beautiful lobby area. Didn't use restaurant facility for breakfast as thought $17 p.p. a bit pricey. Used local diners and got a great choice and paid $17 for two. Room basic, bed comfortable, carpet needed cleaning and bathroom needed updating. 40 minute walk to Times Square but lots to see on the way. Don't think I would stay here again though. No tea and coffee making facility in the room, would really have appreciated this, particularly on rising early due to adjusting to the time difference.

Everything about this hotel is top notch. Great location, beatiful lobby, clean rooms. Just an all around excellent hotel! The bed was great also!
We didn't order room service or eat in the restaurant so cannot comment on that.

Despite their good location their star rating was inaccurate . Staff were not friendly or helpful. There are no minibars or coffee machines in the rooms and the promise of overnight shoe cleaning failed to materialise.
Should you return to the hotel during the day you will find that there is no heating in the rooms.also room not made up at three in the afternoon.

Beds comfortable, breakfast buffet at $17 reasonable.

Pleasant room, with nice view. Hotel reception staff were all lovely, full of information and rear sense of humour too. Very helpful, would stay here again. Great location as we were able to walk into Central Park and the zoo, and then also all the way to the Rockefeller centre.

My husband, our 2.5 year old, and I stayed here for four nights last week on my birthday trip to NYC. I picked this hotel mainly because of its proximity to Central Park and its location in the UWS (Upper West Side). The location was ideal for our family at this stage. Though I am no stranger to NYC, this was our first time staying in Manhattan with our toddler. I would highly recommend this hotel for families with young children. I would also recommend it to just about anyone wanting to stay in Manhattan, but not in the craziness that is Times Square. Although we did have a little issue with the heater/thermostat (it would get very warm in the room), the hotel staff was very prompt in fixing the problem.

The hotel is located close to 81st and Columbus and it is in very easy walking distance to great restaurants/cafes/delis, the B/C train station, shopping (including a toy store or two), as well as right across the street from the American Museum of Natural History. Only two things would have catapulted our stay to a level beyond excellent: 1) free mini-refrigerator and 2) free Wi-Fi. Even without those things, our hotel stay was lovely.

I've stayed in different parts of the City--from Chinatown to the UWS (on different occasions)--this was a great, clean hotel in one of the best neighborhoods in Manhattan (IMO). I can't wait for our next trip to NYC--we would LOVE to stay here again!
