This hotel is right across the street from the Museum of Natural History AND Central Park. It's only two blocks from the Children's Museum of Manhattan! While the rooms were your typical smallish NYC hotel rooms, we did score a nice end 1 bedroom room with a separate bedroom... So great! The staff was excellent as well! Great restaurants in the area and lots to do without being in the middle of Times Square.

This place is in a good location if you want to run round Central Park it's also very close to the natural history museum and subway. Good clean hotel, my room was small but I think that's normal here in New York.

Checked in late. If youwant to stay in a hotel close to the late night scene, this place is not for you. I checked in around 10 pm and was hungry but most places were closed. Definitely not complaining about it. ..neighborhood was great and had no problem getting to sleep (much quieter than midtown).Lots of upscaled shopping and restaurants. American Museum of Natural History across the street. Subway close by.

An older, boutique-style hotel with a beautiful Upper West Side location, close to Central Park and across from the Museum of Natural History. Lots of cafes, restaurants and boutiques close by. It feels like staying in a real neighbourhood - quiet and friendly, but close to everything. The staff were wonderful and took good care of us. I won't stay anywhere else in NY anymore!

We chose to stay at the Excelsior Hotel on Memorial Day evening when we were driving our daughter back to NYC. It was convenient to our daughter's apartment, the price was right - I guess because everyone was leaving when we were arriving - and the rate - according to their website "special offers" page - even included breakfast. The property is a lovely old hotel in very nice condition. The beds are comfy and it's pretty quiet. The breakfast room on the 2nd floor was pretty (looks like an old wood-paneled library) and the continental breakfast was fine, though nothing exceptional. (i.e. I wouldn't pay the $17 asking price for it.) Given all of that, I was quite pleased until I got my bill, which included $34 for breakfast for my husband and I. We immediately contested this and were told that there was no way we had booked the breakfast rate. We went home with instructions to call the reservations manager this morning. I did so and explained the dilemma, stating that I booked from the special offers page and that there must be a problem with their website if they are unable to verify that. (I had, unfortunately, deleted my confirmation email.) The reservations manager, Daisy, gave me a lot of lip and plenty of attitude, demanding that I remember the name of the person who checked me in and verified that I had indeed booked the free breakfast. She went on to tell me she would not refund my money and that I can go ahead a write a bad review in Tripadvisor, so here it is. I must say that I've never been treated so rudely by hotel personnel. I WILL NOT stay at the Excelsior again and will make sure that my readers (I am a freelance travel writer for several newspapers and websites) do not stay there either. Too bad, because it was a lovely spot.

Stayed here for 5 nights in Nov whilst on first trip to NYC. Lovely quiet location with plenty of good bars/restaraunts within 10 min walk. Hotel was very comfortable and staff friendly. About 40min walk to Times Square but that was a great way to start the day. Would definately stay again.
