“Pretty good hotel in great location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 July 2014 via mobile

Spent 3 nights here & found it very clean & comfortable with fairly spacious rooms for a city like New York. Location superb, close to Central Park. Nice safe area. Breakfast buffet was slightly disappointing, as was lack of free Wifi in room & absence of coffee maker. Overall though, would recommend it. Staff very friendly & helpful

For what we paid, we got only a small room. The bathroom is old and claustrophobic. We can barely find enough room to store luggage. You may be better off staying at more familiar name hotels. However, the location of this hotel is very convenient. The restaurant is pricey.

Room Tip: Corner rooms may be better

This is our second stay here . The price was right and we love the location. Overall the room was large and clean. Beautiful tile bathrooms but the shower system really needs updating as well as the chairs and love seat. I would not recommend the hotel breakfast. Overpriced for the quality of the food.

Hotel was under construction while we were there. The room was lovely and clean, however, there wasn't much space to store suitcases. The bathroom could have done with an extractor fan. The views from the window were amazing. We were just down the street from Central Park and the Natural History Museum. It states on their website there was free wifi, but this was only available on floor two and in the lobby, otherwise you had to pay for it. There are many great coffee houses and places to eat within walking distance, and these are far cheaper than eating in the hotel.

Room Tip: Our room had great views.

We visited the City in June on business and chose the Excelsior because of its great location to the museums and Central Park. Rooms were spacious for the City but we found the breakfast a bit pricey even for NYC. A continental breakfast "on the house" would be appreciated.

We were high up facing the museum looking out over the city in what felt like a little apartment- we loved it. Windows both north and south for air and light. There's no free wifi and had to go to Starbucks for morning coffee and tea, but the neighborhood has everything! And the east side is an easy ride or walk across the park. All the restaurants and shops of Columbus and Amsterdam right there. Zabars a walk away. We were quite happy with our stay!

Excelsior Hotel New York (Upper West Side)

Location: Located on the Upper West Side very close to Central Park. The area which many years ago was a very undesirable location has become on the nicer areas of New York with museums, shopping and restaurants nearby. The real attraction of the hotel for me was the quiet location compared to mid-town and its proximity to Central Park.

General: I recommend the hotel

Reception Area: The reception area is medium sized for this boutique style hotel, but there is plenty of room to sit down and meet people. There are many shops and restaurants near the hotel as well as an adjacent bar/restaurant. I had less than a 2 minute wait to check-in. The staff was somewhat on the cold side, but helpful and efficient.

Room: I do enjoy boutique style hotels and this one does not disappoint, though there is room for improvements when it comes to the little things. The bed (a king) and pillows were comfortable. The room was clean, but lighting is an issue. I also had lights which did not function (presumably the bulb had burnt out). There was a usable work desk area, with a couple of power outlets. You may want to bring a small power strip if you have a lot of electronics. Storage was adequate. The room was quiet, but there were times when I could hear people in the room next to mine. It was never an issue. The bathroom was small with only one sink, but was appointed nicely. My tub/shower combination had drainage issues which I reported to the front desk.

Food: I did not eat at the hotel, however I did go to the adjacent bar which was interesting and they did have some tapas style food. This is New York, so there are always good restaurants nearby.
Check in

My reservation record was accurate.

The check-in process was efficient.

The check-in staff was good.

Guest Room
My room was clean and comfortable.
My room was furnished appropriately.
My bed and bedding was comfortable.
The room was quiet and large (by New York standards).

Guest Staff
The guest staff was prompt and reliable.
The guest staff was knowledgeable.

Housekeeping staff – my room was clean and had all amenities, though I did have a non-functioning lamp and clogged tub.

Food and Dining
I did not dine at the hotel.

Amenities
I did not use any hotel amenities.

Check out
The check-out process was timely and efficient.
I received a complete and accurate bill.

Room Tip: I would try to get a room near the end of a hall.
