“NYC Hotel with a big room?!”
Reviewed 17 November 2013

Great hotel. Midtown east on Park Ave. Fantastic neighborhood. Nice walk to all the broadway theaters and mid-town restuarants. Room was huge for NYC with a lovely king size bed. GREAT bathroom - really. Fantastic views and big windows - ask for a high floor. Lovely staff, very sweet.
This is a japanese owned hotel with some great luxurious details focused on a wealthy japanese clientele. The Sunday jazz brunch doesn't disappoint. We will always look for a room here again.

Hidden hotel that the Asian community knows well but the outside world doesn't. Beautiful little hotel on Park Ave so you know the location will command a certain aura. Very nice rooms and a good size. Found this on www.quikbook.com because this hotel won't show up on the big travel booking sites

Visited the Kitano for a 4 night stay recently with my husband and daughter. We were a little concerned before arriving due to reviews regarding smoking rooms, but we were reassured by the manager that this wouldn't be a problem. It certainly wasn't ! We were met by friendly and efficient front desk staff, welcomed us with a complimentary upgrade to a corner room with a fantastic view of the Empire State building. We were over whelmed by the room and the views, not to mention the hotel offered complimentary fruit to celebrate my husbands birthday. Comfortable bed and good bathroom facilities. An excellent all round service- with not a hint of smoke on the tenth floor. Thank you !

Room Tip: Corner room on the tenth floor- outstanding views.

Stayed one night in the Kitano. Found the staff to be friendly and efficient. The room was clean and large (junior suite) with a bathroom with bath and shower and a state of the art toilet.,The room was quiet at night-so no problem sleeping. There is green tea and coffee making facility in the room, so you may need to bring your own tea bags if you prefer regular tea..Found a cafe nearby called Moonstruck ,which served a lovely breakfast. The hotel is on 38th so an easy walk to Macy's . Noticed they have a free chauffeur. service to Wall St in the morning, which is handy if you are over for business . There is a 9.99 charge for wifi in the room, but it is free in lobby.

Stayed here for one night on the way to somewhere else.
The hotel is ostensibly japanese, and certainly geared towards the japanese visitor.
We received a very polite welcome and the room was fine - a little tired, but the bathroom was very nice.
The service from the doormen was absolutely excellent - they were the best, but the rest of the hotel was just so-so. I asked for some tea to be brought to the room and the lady refused, saying we could make it ourselves in the room and save money - I didn't want to save money and told her so, but we weren't getting any tea unless we made it ourselves.
Anyway, terrific doormen, and we have no reason not to stay again, it just wasn't awesome.

Was left waiting at reception while the receptionist was on the phone.

Went into the Jazz bar for dinner and ordered a cheese platter which came with salami and I'm a vegetarian - didn't state this on the menu.

Was charged two cover charges when the menu states a $10 charge. Though some state per person, mine did not. Discussed with manager who was extremely rude and asked me if I'd not travelled much and had I stayed in a hotel in US before.

My advice would be don't stay here as the staff are rude and don't take criticism kindly.

ClementCarey, General Manager at Kitano New York, responded to this review, 4 November 2013
Dear Ms. Nolan,

I am so sorry that your stay at The Kitano was less than completely satisfactory. We are very proud of our entertainment program at Jazz at Kitano and want every guest to have a enjoyable experience. Although I believe the descriptions of the menu items (the cheese platter includes soppressata salami) and cover charge ($10 cover on Wednesdays and Thursdays) policies are accurate, our staff should have fully assisted you to ensure the offerings were understood. There is never an excuse for failing to be gracious and hospitable.

Thank you for your comments. We value criticism, as well as praise, as opportunities to improve our business.

We could never afforded this hotel without the Priceline deal. And what a deal it was. Wonderful hotel. Well-located. Security always watching at the door. Great valet service. Just don't put anything in the mini-bar to keep it cool or whatever. There are sensors that will charge you, even if you don't take it out, just has to move. The hotel readily fixed the charges, so no problem.
