I can't rave enough about Hotel Beacon! It's like having my own NYC apartment. The Upper West side location may seem a little out of the way, but it's a quick and close walk to the 72nd Street subway, whose express trains (be sure you get on one of those and not the non-express) whisked me away to business in mid-town in 5 minutes. Sure, I could stay at a fancy business type business type hotel in mid-town ... be there, done that (and friends are still doing that). Because I'm not in that central location, I save about $100 a night and gain an extra sitting room and mini-kitchen, perfect for extended stays for 4-5 days. Across the street is the amazing Fairways Grocery store, with food literally stacked to the ceiling. And even though there isn't room service (which you know you pay for ultimately in a higher room rate), the coffee shop next door stays open pretty late and delivers! Did I mention the Starbucks across the street?
For you fitness fans, no gym on premises, but Beacon offers a discount at a local upscale gym a block away. And with Central Park so close by, maybe you should treat yourself to some fresh air and local scenery? And there's no Business Center to speak of ... a couple of computers in a converted nook (perfectly fine for checking email and printing boarding passes). I used the wireless daily and found the signal to be perfectly adequate.
But back to the location ... you'll feel like a local in the toney Upper West side. You're within walking distance to Lincoln Center, Natural History Museum, Shake Shack and other cultural delights! I can't wait to stay again. Truly deserving of its Tripadvisor high ranking!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a higher floor. It is New York after all, and there is street noise. You'll al...

We were here four nights in total in november 2001. Spacious rooms, very clean, 2 double beds, flat screen tv, kitchenette. Everything you need when you return from another exhausting day in this wonderful city. There is a supermarket across the street and a fine delicatessen as well. Liquor store with quality wines next door. Subway station about 150 yards from hotel entrance. They don't serve breakfast but nextdoor is a small restaurant that serves simple but adequate meals. Check-in was a breeze, very nice staff welcoming you. We will certainly be back when we return to NYC.

The Hotel Beacon was great. Fantastic location to the subway and all that you would need for a great holiday in NYC. Fairways (small supermarket) across the road is fantastic and was full of fresh fruit and vegies which is so refreshing when you are travelling. Will definately stay again when I get a chance to travel again.. Don't look past this one!!! It is a real gem

This comfortable hotel in an excellent location on the upper west side - only a few minutes' walk to the subway - lives up to the expectations previous reviewers have set. Friendly and helpful staff, lovely and tastefully furnished rooms, even with a miniature kitchen, which we didn't use, and a lovely view from ours looking east over the rooftops. The only minor complaint was that unlike many rivals, there is no free internet in the rooms, I hope they change that - lots of Beacon guests take their laptops and iPads to the Starbucks next door to catch up on the net - but it probably wouldn't stop me booking again. A lovely place to stay.

Excellent location and value (corner of 75th and Broadway). Walking distance to Lincoln Centre, Central Park and Columbus Circle. Only a 2 minute walk to 71st/72nd Street Subway with fast trains (#2 & 3) to Times Square and Penn Station. Selection of restaurants (hotel provides a good list if you need ideas) excellent, and across the road from a Citarella (a famous deli) and a big supermarket (Fairway) with a restaurant famous for its pancakes and breakfast. There is a kitchenette in every room, with 2 electric hotplates, microwave, toaster, coffee machine, sink and fridge, with crockery and cutlery provided as well. Wireless internet available. I've stayed here twice this year, and both stays have been great. Great choice if you have friends/family going to Columbia University as it's a few stops away.

Room Tip: If you are a couple, must book early as the double rooms go very quickly. Restaurants around the ar...

We stayed here for our daughter's graduation. Despite the city being absolutely crazy with people in town for numerous graduations, we felt like this hotel was a great respite from all the craziness. Very friendly staff willing to help any way they can. Only drawback is catching a cab in the morning. Because of how the roads come together, and the number of people trying to catch a cab to get to ceremonies, it was hard to catch one in front of the hotel. Walk 1 block west and you will catch one quicker. Would stay here again in a heartbeat!!
