The hotel was an excellent value for our family of 4. Service was excellent, staff knowledgable and helpful and the location on the upper west side minimized street noise so usual in parts of the city. We used both subway and taxis to explore.

Only downside were the size of the double beds...they were smallish and even two children had difficulty sharing the same small bed

We stayed 3 nights in a spacious suite with 2 DBL beds plus a very comfortable Queen sofa bed in a separate room which provided us with all the space we needed.
An added bonus was the small but fully equipped kitchenette complete with with fridge, freezer and coffee maker.
There is a large supermarket directly opposite the hotel which was great for buying groceries to take back to the room and they also have a cafe upstairs which served super meals.
The location was fantastic - only 2 blocks from 72nd Street subway station which ensured easy access to all areas of Manhattan as well as being only a 5 minute walk from Central Park.
We were in a front room but were not bothered by any street noise as the rooms have double glazing and this ensured a great night's sleep.
All of the staff were extremely helpful and friendly which added to a very enjoyable stay and, if we are ever in New York again, would definitely stay at the Beacon.
Highly recommended

I stayed in a queen suite and loved everything about, including the $305 reasonable price for this spacious accommodation. Very helpful front desk and great location. There is a very good diner right next door for breakfast, lunch or whatever. Nice Beacon Bar with manager Michelle watching over things.

Great location and value and right next to Beacon Theater for a good show.

Not only was the room/suite clean and aesthetic it was comfortable and spacious and the staff were always ready to help.We felt at home and the kitchenette made our room the breakfast centre with the other couple that was traveling with us. And they, the staff, happily offer and do the washing up.
Ask for a room on a high floor and of course not adjacent to the lifts.
We stayed for ten nights and were happy with the location (it beat the midtown location of our friends and my convention centre hotel) and all the nearby facilities from the two supermarkets across the road, convenient bus and underground stations, and a full range of retailers north, south and east of the hotel.

Room Tip: Standard request- upper floor and not adjacent to the lift well

This was my umpteenth visit to the city, but first stay at Hotel Beacon and on the Upper West side. What a fantastic find! The Beacon was a perfect choice for us because:

(1) Value for family travelers - We were a family of four with two teens and needed the bedding and space that implies, but weren't keen on paying rack for two rooms or taking our chances with Priceline for what would have been modest savings off the Beacon's reasonable (for NYC!) rates. We had a spacious (for NYC!), well-appointed one bedroom corner suite with 2 DBL beds + queen sofabed with a super comfortable memory foam mattress + tiny but fully-equipped kitchenette--a bonus considering the Fairway Market across the street (convenient for groceries, and their cafe serves up a really yummy breakfast).

(2) Location, location, location - The hotel is a 2-block walk from the 72nd street red line station, which gives you quick, direct access to Lincoln Center, Midtown, Times Square (and the convenient cross-town shuttle to Grand Central), Penn Station (terrific for our Amtrak arrival, also for Empire State Building), Chinatown/Little Italy, Wall Street and the Battery (Statue of Liberty). It's also a short walk away from Central Park. And what really wowed me was how quiet the hotel was at night--it can be a challenge to get a good night's sleep in the city that never sleeps, but the Beacon's residential neighborhood location + soundproof windows made for dreamy nights...literally.

(3) Friendly, helpful staff - We received excellent customer service from everyone: front desk, doormen, bell service and housekeeping.

Room Tip: Corner suite, high floor

We stayed here 3 nights at the start of a tour of the USA. It's in a great location, close to the subway station on 72nd.Street. The room was spacious and had a kitchenette, which was an amazing bonus, as the building used to be an apartment block so they have kept these in the rooms. The staff were extremely courteous and smart. The supermarket opposite was quite expensive but a convenience store at the back of the hotel had cold beers and fresh fruit packs, which we could put in our fridge. A safe in the room was very useful for leaving valuables. The Beacon Theatre is next door, a lovely building, with lots of British acts on tour.

Room Tip: We were on the front of the hotel but had no street noise so soundproofing was good

It's been 33 years since my (then new) wife and I, flushed with hopes and expectations of our lives together, visited New York in 1981. Then, we found the city dirty and congested, the population generally rude, and financially we suffered at the hands of unscrupulous taxi drivers. This time? Well the traffic congestion hasn't changed much, but the city is cleaner, the people we met were helpful, and we weren't ripped off by unscrupulous taxi drivers. We chose to stay at the Hotel Beacon since we could get from JFK to the Upper West Side by train, and as some of you know, we love travelling by train! You do have to change from the A-train to get to the closest stop to the Hotel at 72nd St., but from there it's only a few minutes to the hotel.
And the Hotel is good value - rooms were large, there was a kitchenette with a real coffee-machine, and a small fridge. And we received a complimentary morning newspaper! WiFi was free, though while our connection speed seemed high, data transfer seemed a little slow.
As others have noted, immediately opposite the hotel is a supermarket where you can choose to buy foods without added corn syrup and fructose!! Would we stay here again?
Yes!
