“Third Stay Even Better”
Reviewed 1 February 2009

This is the third time we have stayed at the Beacon over an eight year period. Since our last stay the rooms have been refurbished and they look amazing.

We had a suite with one bedroom, a sitting room, kitchenette and bathroom. The room opened onto an entry area with the bathroom to the left, and a large closet to the right which held the safe and was great for hanging coats and keeping shoes.

The bedroom contained two double beds which we found to be very comfortable, a flat screen tv and a smaller closet. The sitting area had a couch, armchair, footrest, coffee table and another flatscreen tv. The kitchenette also had a small table with two chairs, a microwave, oven and full fridge.

We had no issues with the room, only a minor problem of a leaking toilet. Housekeeping was good, we came back at the end of each day to a very clean and tidy room.

Front desk staff were efficient, but never overly friendly. Hotel is in an excellent spot across from Fairway supermarket, close to subway stop and a few blocks from central park.

We also ate at the restuarant above the Fairway supermarket. Also located next door is the Viand Cafe where we found the food to a bit more expensive than other diners in the area and the service a bit slow and unattentive. The best two meals we had whilst staying at the Beacon were at La Vela Italiana in Amsterdam Ave @78th st. Highly recommended!

Overall we would recommend the Beacon to our family and friends who are visiting New York.

I stayed two nights at the Beacon on a recent business trip. I would definitely recommend the hotel to those who are looking for a reasonably-priced hotel in a terrific location. On previous trips to the city, I'd always stayed near Rockefeller Plaza and hated the hotels there. The Beacon is a terrific alternative. It's a short walking distance from Central Park (about 5 minutes by foot to the Dakota) and conveniently located for bus or metro travel. The room is cheaply but tastefully furnished and the full kitchenette was a plus for me as I took advantage of all the epicurean markets along Broadway (definitely check out Zabars!) and had a marvellous breakfast in my room. The only downside, especially for business travelers, is that there is a $9.95 charge for wireless in the room. I remedied this by using the "business center" (a small, overheated, and claustrophobic room right off the lobby) that had free computer access and printing. The front desk staff and concierge staff were friendly and helpful. I'd definitely stay at the Beacon again.

We had a great stay at the Hotel Beacon. We had the two bedroom suite and it was extremely spacious (for NYC) and had been newly renovated. All the furnishings and appliances were new (and clean) and the beds were really comfortable. It was a great location for us, away from the bustle of Timesquare, but still close enough to get around really easily. I would definitely stay here again.

I love the Beacon--it's our home away from home in NYC. Nothing fancy, but perfect for our needs. It's clean, huge rooms/suites with kitchenettes, amazing location on the Upper West Side. Close to Central Park ( 5 minute walk), the subway is two minutes away, the wonderful Fairway Market across the street, Starbuck right next door for morning coffee, love it!

My only complain is that 2 years ago, the hotel was rated a 1 1/2 star hotel. Now that it's a 2 star, the cost has gone up over 30 percent! Such a bummer! (Consequently it went from trip advisor advisor #16 in NYC to #53)

I'm sure the accomodations in all of the City has increased, and it's still a pretty good bang for your buck.

I used trip advisor to research this hotel and found reviews and information including photographs to be reliable. Our stay with a family of 4 for 8 nights was excellent. Overall staff were friendy and helpful especially housekeeping staff. The permanant residents of the building were friendly and it really contributed to our New York experience to chat to some locals. As mentioned in other reviews the markets were exceptional and we were able to get something delicious to eat even at 12midnight when we arrived. Good value.

  • Liked — Size of the rooms for big city accomodation
  • Disliked — Some noise on a couple of mornings due to consruction work in building

Nice place,
Nice rooms bigger than regular NY hotels

I travel with kids , so place with TV and other ammenities good enough, nice rooms, just renewed, myabe a poor service in
bathroom supplies, but nice, I think for the same price I paid i can book a room at the Waldorf, but little smaller room.

By the hotel there is a Restaurant and good service and nearby area there is a nice places to dine out.

Walking distance to NY Natural History Museum.
