What a pleasure! The freshly renovated, attractive & comfortably furnished accommodations really do look like the photos on the hotel's website, but the photos do not show just how airy and spacious the bedroom of our suite was, the size of the walk-in closet (with window), how well-equipped the compact kitchen is (toaster, microwave, basic cookware, small range with oven, microwave, sink & refrigerator). The bathroom, however, is quite compact, and the towels are not luxuriously thick.

In addition to the closet space, there were ample drawers for the 3 of us; the large flat-screen TV was directly across from the sofa; excellent climate control, an ergonomic desk chair; and the iPod docking station was a nice touch -- all features, I might add, that were not to be found in the Sofitel suite in which I stayed 2 weeks later at twice the price. And, my friend reported that the sofabed was surprisingly comfortable.

This is not a deluxe hotel with full-service amenities, such as a bar & restaurant. But the immediate environs offer a variety of those & food markets; a gym [day passes available to hotel guests at a discount] and a good wine shop are just next door; and the neighborhood, one of my favorites, delighted my out-of-town friends as much as I hoped. For those staying longer, there are also coin-operated washers & dryers in a pleasant-enough laundry room on the 7th floor. Lastly, the staff was unfailingly pleasant, welcoming and professional.

If I could afford it, I'd be tempted to give up my apartment to live at the Beacon year-round; I'm sure you too will be pleased with your stay here.

My friend and I selected the Hotel Beacon because it was next to the Beacon Theater. We had tickets for Leonard Cohen and the hotel location was convenient. We were pleasantly surprised with a great room. There were 3 closets; important if you travel with kids. The bedroom had 2 double beds and a TV. The living room/kitchenette contained a loveseat size sofa bed, a chair and ottoman, bistro table with 2 chairs, coffee table, TV on top of a bureau, fridge, sink, stove and oven, and cabinets. The bathroom was small but looked newly tiled in marble and was fine for us. The room was clean and the furnishings appeared to be on the newer side. Close by are plenty of places to eat in a variety of price ranges and the Fairway market across the street was an experience in itself. I will definitely stay here again even if I attending an event in mid-town.

Stayed here for a tradeshow and it was great! We were in one of the 1 BR suites and for the money, it was unbeatable. The kitchen, sitting room and extra TV were perfect. The room we had was freshly renovated and very clean. This is not a luxury hotel but has more of a NYC apartment feel in a WONDERFUL neighborhood. Right across the street from Fairway and Citarella.. you really can't go wrong! Staff at front desk helpful too!

If you want convenience, quiet, and security far from the madding crowd, this is the hotel for you. Perhaps 15 minutes to the opera house by foot. Plenty of restaurants on the way, with several sweet shops available all night on the way back. The subway is close by. Plenty of taxis. Very safe neighborhood. Skip the deli next door for breakfast and seek out Alice's Tea Pot at 103 W. 73rd. If you are walking, be sure to pay attention to the intersection of Broadway and Amsterdam... easy to wind up unintended on the other. Our room was immaculately clean, with a kitchenette. (They even left a bottle of dishwashing detergent for our use.) Don't miss the Fairway Market across the street that must have the freshest and most diverse foods in town. If you want to cook your own meals, thereby saving loads of money, you could not ask for a better hotel. It's not the room that makes it special. It's simply a perfectly convenient spot to retreat from the New York hustle and bustle.

This is the third time we have stayed at the Beacon over an eight year period. Since our last stay the rooms have been refurbished and they look amazing.

We had a suite with one bedroom, a sitting room, kitchenette and bathroom. The room opened onto an entry area with the bathroom to the left, and a large closet to the right which held the safe and was great for hanging coats and keeping shoes.

The bedroom contained two double beds which we found to be very comfortable, a flat screen tv and a smaller closet. The sitting area had a couch, armchair, footrest, coffee table and another flatscreen tv. The kitchenette also had a small table with two chairs, a microwave, oven and full fridge.

We had no issues with the room, only a minor problem of a leaking toilet. Housekeeping was good, we came back at the end of each day to a very clean and tidy room.

Front desk staff were efficient, but never overly friendly. Hotel is in an excellent spot across from Fairway supermarket, close to subway stop and a few blocks from central park.

We also ate at the restuarant above the Fairway supermarket. Also located next door is the Viand Cafe where we found the food to a bit more expensive than other diners in the area and the service a bit slow and unattentive. The best two meals we had whilst staying at the Beacon were at La Vela Italiana in Amsterdam Ave @78th st. Highly recommended!

Overall we would recommend the Beacon to our family and friends who are visiting New York.

I stayed two nights at the Beacon on a recent business trip. I would definitely recommend the hotel to those who are looking for a reasonably-priced hotel in a terrific location. On previous trips to the city, I'd always stayed near Rockefeller Plaza and hated the hotels there. The Beacon is a terrific alternative. It's a short walking distance from Central Park (about 5 minutes by foot to the Dakota) and conveniently located for bus or metro travel. The room is cheaply but tastefully furnished and the full kitchenette was a plus for me as I took advantage of all the epicurean markets along Broadway (definitely check out Zabars!) and had a marvellous breakfast in my room. The only downside, especially for business travelers, is that there is a $9.95 charge for wireless in the room. I remedied this by using the "business center" (a small, overheated, and claustrophobic room right off the lobby) that had free computer access and printing. The front desk staff and concierge staff were friendly and helpful. I'd definitely stay at the Beacon again.
