“Would never stay again!”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

I would never stay here again. The front desk was sooo rude, even the manager! And the rules to get into the pool isn't even worth going. The headache caused to make sure anyone staying is registered at the front desk is just insane. The so called owner sits at the pool getting drunk all day yelling at people as they try to relax and makes sure he gets first service before anyone at the pool bar. He was an embarrassment to the hotel. The air condition was weak and bathroom was creepy. Oh and forget trying to use the pool after check out, you will have 5 pool security guards escort you out. Stay away!!!!!

Dear ABC198912

Thank you for taking the time to write your review and I sincerely apologize your experience was less than pleasant at our property. Your comments have been shared with the executive office and we understand how frustrating and time consuming it can be to register all guest names; however we really require this information to be able to provide the pool usage to all our guest staying/occupying the room at no extra charge and more importantly for security safety reasons. I can understand how using the pool after check-out would be great and again I apologize for any inconvenience not being able to extend the courtesy as it is due to a capacity level and we truly want all of our guest to be able to enjoy the outdoor pool.

Sincerely,
Front Services Manager Jasmin Ortiz-Cruz

Reviewed 13 July 2014

This review is for a three-night stay at the Holiday Inn Midtown-57th Street that took place over the Independence Day weekend in July 2014. Our party was four people (three adults and one teenager) and we stayed in a Two Double Bed Deluxe Nonsmoking room.

DROP-OFF AND PARKING - There is only a very small drop-off area in front of the hotel and limos and trucks sometime park in this area for an extended period of time. We were able to park on the day we arrived but upon checking out had to double-park on 57th Street to load our car. The hotel should do a better job of enforcing the drop-off.

There is a garage at the hotel for $42 per day. We parked at another garage a few blocks away with a much lower rate.

CHECK-IN AND CHECK-OUT – We arrived shortly after 1:00 p.m. I had called the hotel several days earlier to inquire about early check-in for IHG Rewards Club members and was informed that we would not be check in before the standard 3:00 p.m. time. However, the very efficient front desk person was able to check us in early and was extremely helpful throughout the process.

ROOM COMFORT – We were pleased with the size, cleanliness and décor of the double bed deluxe room. The beds are a little small but otherwise comfortable and the room is big enough for four people to move around in. The sink vanity and bathroom were very small, though, and the age of the room showed in these areas. The biggest frustration was the old toilet – it was extremely loud and the handle had to be jiggered repeatedly to get it to flush. We were awoken several times a night by the loud toilets in adjoining rooms and the noise from the hallway was very loud at times (especially when drunk guests show up at 4:30 a.m. after partying in the city).

SERVICE –The bell staff was prompt and helpful in assisting us in moving our luggage. We had requested extra towels during the reservation process but were disappointed that this request was never honored (we had to ask our housekeeping lady). Also, the ice machine on our floor did not work at all and we were forced to take the elevator to another floor to access a working machine. We called the front desk on the first day to tell them about the nonworking machine and were told that someone would check into the situation but the machine was never repaired during out stay.

HOTEL LOCATION AND PROPERTY – The location of the hotel is fantastic. There are multiple coffee shops, delis and restaurants in every direction, and it is less than ten minutes to Central Park and the Columbus Circle subway station. There are also some great restaurants just a few blocks south on 9th Avenue.

The building itself is old but functional. The front lobby and lounge area is smaller than many typical hotel properties but is clean, well-lit and inviting. The elevators are very small and old. The hallways on our floor were narrow but clean, although used room service trays would sometimes sit for several hours awaiting pickup.

POOL AND ROOFTOP LOUNGE – A major selling point for us was the rooftop pool and we used it on Saturday and Sunday during our stay. The pool area was only open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. during our stay. The pool water was cold but very refreshing. There is a poolside bar serving various beverages ($6 for a draft beer, $9 for a Pina Colada or daiquiri). The pool is very popular and the lounge chairs quickly fill up by 10:15 a.m. on a sunny day. We were disappointed though that many people will put items on the chairs to ‘claim’ them and then leave, sometimes for several hours. The hotel also reserved a number of chairs for ‘club’ regulars. Some of the reserved chairs sat empty the entire afternoon – I would suggest to management that they should allow chairs to be reserved only when a member is planning to use them, and perhaps limit the number of members on a given day to allow paying hotel guests to enjoy the pool.

WOULD WE RETURN? – Yes, we would return if we were looking for a good budget hotel in a great location but probably only if we are able to get a room at a discounted rate. Many other hotels in the city offer newer properties with more updated amenities and less noise.

Room Tip: Rooms in the south tower are quieter because they are located away from busy 57th Street.

Don't typically write reviews but this is worth sharing. Check in was long because the check in people are maxis. After 30 min I finally got to desk but turned away because I did not have a photo id. Asked if I could use a digital copy (must have left my license at home ). They said ok. But them they questioned why my signature was not exactly like the digital copy. I laughed but they were serious. Then they said my name was not on the reservation. It was my wife's name!? So hey turned me away again. Really?! This came from the manager. How unprofessional, rude and naive on customer service. Check out process was no much better. Stay away...

The location is very good. Our room (2 adults, 2 children) was good sized, especially for NYC. We stayed in the non-renovated part of the hotel, which definitely needs renovation and modernizing. the rooms and hotel are very clean. The AC was inadequate to fully cool the room. When we asked for additional towels, housekeeping sent them up very quickly. WIFI is free but very slow.

Room Tip: Stay in renovated room.

Location was great . As for the hotel , the term tired is too nice.
Carpets were filthy in the lobby , room smelt stale, once again that's kind.
Breakfast was ok.
I will say though that the day we left 8.07.2014
It looked like a big refurb was getting under way. So check if it's been done this would be a nice place to stay !

Upon arrival at the hotel (the evening of 27 June) was very well received. We were assigned (2 adults and 2 children) a unique room, and with great views of the 57th Street. During our stay at the hotel (we started July 4 evening) we were very good; we also bought breakfast. Very hearty breakfast with eggs, various cakes, milk, and donuts of all kinds. I avoided the coffee preferring an excellent tea. Clean room and courtesy of all the waiters make this hotel an excellent base for those wanting to stay in New York a few days. The Hotel is very close to Central Park (10 minute walk) and, if I'm being a bit picky, it was a bit far from the center of New York (5th Avenue, Empire State Building) but we had no trouble in reaching the our destinations on foot or by taxi. We wanted to use the subway to speed up the move, but going to walk around New York is tasted much better than the city air. It means that the next time we will use the subway! New York wait for us!!
