“Brilliant hotel!”
Reviewed 20 December 2011

When looking for a hotel in NYC, I'm not too bothered about anything fancy as I don't spend much time in the room itself. However when booking this time, the Doubletree was reasonably priced on a special offer. I was hesitant about staying on Times Square, I find it too crowded and 'touristy' but I'm pleased I decided to go ahead and book this hotel.

After the hustle and bustle of the street outside, you step into a small area where the lifts are. You wait a few seconds for one to arrive and it quickly takes you up to the 3rd floor hotel lobby. The lobby itself is mostly peaceful, although at check in/out times it does get crowded and you often won't be able to get a seat. At other times though the bar area is a quiet haven from the bustle outside. The staff at reception were friendly and helpful, and of course the check in cookie was delicious!

I hadn't paid for a room with a view, as again I don't spend much time in the room. We were given room 1504 on the 15th floor and I was surprised at the great view we actually had. We looked onto Times Squre and also some office buildings and at night time it was great to look out at the city lights!

The room itself is fantastic. I understand the Times Square view rooms you pay extra for are actually much smaller as they're corner suites, so it was great to have a good view and not compensate with the size. The living room was spacious with a sofa and chair, coffee table, desk and a wet bar. The TV was huge, and there was another one in the bedroom although we couldn't get it to work, but that didn't bother us. There was a mini bar and a separate fridge for your own use which was handy. There's also a microwave but I didn't need this.

The bed was extremely comfortable, if you don't like soft beds you'll have trouble here! I did find the suite quite cold a lot of the time, and despite setting the temperature it never seemed to warm up too much.

The room had windows which opened, and opening them demonstrated how silent the room itself was despite Times Square being just outside! You could still hear the occasional siren or horn but it was a distant sound and nothing that disturbed sleep.

Each morning when we left there was a newspaper left outside the hotel room door, and the coffee supplies were always topped up.

There's no free Wi-Fi for the rooms, which was disappointing considering a 3 star hotel in NY we stayed in last year provided at least a slower speed free. There is free Wi-Fi in the lobby when it works, but it also means the lobby will be full of people just sitting on phones and laptops. You also have to pay just to use the computer's in the Business Center, again this is something which was completely free in a 3 star hotel the previous year.

The Times Square location was beginning to bug me slightly by the end of our stay, fighting our way through the busy crowds on an evening and constantly fighting off the people selling comedy club tickets, bus tours, restaurant flyers etc every 5 minutes was getting tiresome. The hotel itself is on top of a subway station, but it's a local station with no connections so we rarely got the chance to use it, we often walked down to Times Sq station.

Reception will print off boarding passes, but only outside of check in/out times so we had to ask concierge to print them, who were extremely friendly and despite only using them for this, I would recommend them based on the impression I had.

One thing which did annoy me, an employee stands near the lifts and tries to get you to attend a time share talk at their new Hilton hotel, or sell a cheap stay next time at the new hotel. After fighting off people in Times Square the last thing I wanted was to recieve a sales talk in my hotel and I found it quite annoying.

For breakfast I highly recommend not paying the expensive hotel prices and instead going right outside of the hotel and directly down the adajcent street to Evergreen Diner. We had breakfast there every morning and it was fantastic! The locals used it, it wasn't expensive, and the food portions are huge, along with extremely friendly staff.

I would love to return to this hotel in the future for a reasonable price.

Room Tip: Don't pay for a Times Square view room as they're corner suites and much smaller than the ot...

If you want to be right in the middle of the action, you can't beat this hotel. It is directly in front of theTKTS booth and the stadium seats in the middle island, great for picture taking! You're a short walk from Rockefeller Center, Radio City, Bryant Park, Central Park, NBC Studios, and a myriad of restaurants. The hotel has car service for hire right in front, Martin Antigua Transportation, [--], which I highly recommend for your airport transport rather than the shuttle service which makes so many stops and takes forever! We had a party of 6 people and the taxis are not allowed to take more than 5 so we used them for a couple of other trips too! Really nice people!!!

The hotel had a GREAT staff who were friendly, jovial, and always pleasant. Warm cookies when you check in and whenever you asked! Easy luggage check for the day we were leaving on a late flight. The lobby is on the third floor with a separate set of elevators for the room floors. Their restaurant is convenient, but if you need it there is a McDonald's about two doors down and open early (I'm a huge fan of the Egg McMuffin).

For things to do, we thoroughly enjoyed the tour of the NBC studios. $21 and you buy tickets on the second floor of the NBC Experience Store. You might also want to check on line about tickets to be in the audience of your favorite NBC show. And of course, don't miss the Rockettes' Christmas show, simply outstanding!!!

I recommend early flights going and late flights coming back because you will find an endless number of things to do. NYC has really changed their whole personna since the first time I took my daughters there. The people everywhere are friendly and helpful and will stop and ask if they can help, if they see you looking the least bit lost. I can't wait to go again and see another part of the city. You really need to see it a section at a time, there is so much to see and do! Go and enjoy OUR New York City!!!

After a trip to NYC for my birthday, I realized why I never stay anywhere else. The Doubletree is the best hotel in Manhattan. The location is perfect. One day we walked up to Central Park, all the way to the Guggenheim, and another day we walked all the way down to my favorite bakery in SoHo. Each night we were at the theaters within minutes. And the suites are spacious, unlike many hotels in Manhattan, and the staff is always helpful.

If you are visiting NYC & want to be in the heart of the city, this is the only place to be. Walk out of the hotel foyer & you are there, bang in the middle of Times Square, right in the middle of the hustle and bustle, walk back into the foyer & you can't hear a thing. Your'e right next door to the subway & across the road to the main ticket booth. Hundreds of restaurants right on your doorstep, just steps from Broadway theatres & within walking distance to Central Park, Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall & Rockefeller Centre, what more could you want!! Our suite was on the 44th floor (one off the top) & the views were amazing. The room itself was very clean & the beds very comfortable - no complaints, the hotel staff couldn't be more helpful & the free cookies are delicious. Without a shadow of a doubt we will stay here on our next visit to the Big Apple.

We did quite a lot of research before we selected the Doubletree Guest Suites. We wanted a clean and modern hotel that was located at or near Times Square with an easy walk to the theater district, Rockefeller Center and 5th Avenue shopping. We also wanted a hotel that offered spacious rooms with amenities such as flat screen TV's, a microwave and a small refrigerator. Since it was high season between Thanksgiving and New Year's, we also wanted a hotel that was a good value. Doubletree Guest Suites had it all and then some. This hotel is conveniently located directly across from the TKTS center at Times Square and literally on top of the entrance to the R Subway line. Our suite was on the 38th floor and faced Times Square with a spectacular view of the Manhattan skyline looking westward toward the Hudson River. Our suite had two separate rooms - a bedroom with King Bed and 42" TV and a living room with a sleeper sofa, desk, 42" TV and a wet bar with microwave and refrigerator. The wet bar was particularly welcome in that we could come back to the hotel and relax with a snack and drink or two in our room without paying the outrageous prices for liquor at bars and restaurants in the area. I hate to bring up this subject but we also researched hotels in NYC that have reported problems with bedbugs. The Doubletree Guest Suites was not listed but you'll be surprised to find out that some of the most luxurious hotels in New York have reported problems. You won't find a better value hotel with this location and amenities, believe me. As a testament to the value, the Doubletree Guest Suites was completely sold out during our stay whereas other upscale hotels in the area went begging for guests.

Room Tip: Book well in advance and share your preferences with the reservations person.

This hotel has a great central location. While the sidewalks in Time Square are packed with people and noisy, once you walk through the doors of this place you find a safe haven. Helpful staff and tasty cookies upon arrival. Our room was spacious, quiet and clean.
