Wasn't sure how we'd like sharing a bathroom, but they really do keep the whole place very clean. I loved the old woodwork too, and even the narrow hallways. We had a double room, #704, and had plenty of space, even to do yoga. At first we asked for a room at the back for quiet, but it was much smaller than the #04 number rooms. A good value.

Room Tip: For double rooms, ask for a number such as 604 or 704 - for more space. Still quiet and away from ba...

we had no issues with Hotel 17. A one-night stay yielded no problems even though we had to share the toilet/shower rooms--we didn't even see other people on our floor, even though we know the place was quite booked. The place was clean enough. The rooms are small, like they are in the UK and Europe. The rooms have sinks. No appliances for heating water for tea or instant coffee. Weak in-room hair dryer. Location is quite good, close enough walk to Union Square. East Village-ish.

Room Tip: 615 was quiet, even though it faces the street

Stayed here in a double bed w/shared bath. Room was tiny, 5x10 tops & you could hardly move with two pieces of furniture. Staff was average. Hotel was very clean, very unique old decor. Excellent spot near union station & young happening area of 2nd ave down to 9th. Rooms on streets side are noisy.

I was worried about staying in this hotel after reading the reviews but I did not have 1 single problem with it. Yes the rooms are small & the halls are thin & there are shared bathrooms etc, but the bathrooms were always spotless. Plus your in NYC. Your not going to be spending a great amount of time in your room......if you are then your in the wrong place! Lovely little hotel for the price you pay

Great hotel for the price. The rooms are small but when visiting a city like New York you normally don't plan to spend too much time in the hotel. Shared bathrooms wasn't a problem either - always clean & usually available. Great location for exploring the city.

Several years ago, there was a rock n roll photo shoot at this hotel, and suddenly everyone thought it was the cool place to be. It had a great low price, and while the rooms were tiny and not very impressive (with a shared bathroom in the hallway) there was something cool about being there....but that hype has faded, and we're seeing it now for what it is-- a cheap hotel with small rooms and a shared bathroom in the hall.
There's an old-school style elevator and the hallways are thin thin thin.
A few of the rooms in the front look out at the street, with large brownstone-style windows, and you do get a feeling that you're right there, in NY, and part of it, in an exciting way. The wallpaper in the rooms is funky-- either striped or old-fashioned patterned, and the beds are small (some just single beds) and old and with charming but crappy little blankets. Sink in the room. The prices have gone up, but are still relatively low. The lobby is no more than a vestibule, and the vibe of "we have to be careful of who we let come in the front door" is palpable. The rooms near the bathroom are to be avoided-- the hallway area near the bathrooms do reek of urine and you do hear people coming and going all night and doing what people tend to do in bathrooms. Many of the rooms are very dark and dingy and the windows look DIRECTLY into a brick wall and a tiny air shaft. Most of it is threadbare. Still, a lot of people are charmed by all of this.

My husband and I love to visit NYC but the prices are just too steep. This wonderful small hotel was just the ticket for us -- charming, clean, well located, and so affordable. The shared bathroom was sparkling clean and we never had to wait. Our room was small but comfortable with 2 windows overlooking the street (2nd floor - quiet too!); A/C worked fine; friendly staff. Delightful breakfast places nearby & plenty of restaurants for all budgets. We will definitely stay here again!
