“There is a lot to love about this hotel”
Reviewed 28 July 2014

My husband and I spent a night in New York at the Washington Square Hotel. It was the first time in a very long time that we didn't end up staying at a big chain in Midtown like the Hyatt, Hilton or the Marriott and so the location in the heart of Greenwich Village was a pleasant change for us. Seriously, if your plans are centered around the Village and lower Manhattan, this hotel can't be beat for it's location, just steps away from Washington Square Park. The lobby and hallways are well decorated, welcoming and clean. The staff is friendly and accomodating, especially the bell staff. We had a Queen Room and it was a good size for an older building. The downside for me was the extremely hard mattress and the fact that the only chair in the room was a hard wooden desk chair. The bathroom was clean and well appointed. I was a little apprehensive when we realized our room was right next to the elevator but the room was surprisingly quiet despite it's location. Breakfast was nothing to write home about, typical hotel continental breakfast fare but the coffee was good -- hot, fresh and strong. I will consider The Washington Square Hotel again the next time I am heading into downtown Manhattan.

Room Tip: I would go for a higher floor and avoid the street level if possible.

We stayed here during July '14. Staff were friendly and helpful. $250-$300 per night, and the rooms were extremely small, no minibar or laundry service, facilities are extremely outdated - aircon was very noisy - tv tiny, and cleaning of the rooms weren't acceptable.

The best thing about this hotel is the location. It is close to Washington Square, in the heart of West Village and NYU's campus. It is a quaint hotel with some pluses and minuses. On the plus side, other than location, the bed was comfortable, the rooms are decent tho small. The decor in the lobby is quaint. On the down side, the staff is not overly friendly or helpful. The bellman didn't help us to our room with our luggage - but we saved $10 on not having to tip! The front desk people are a little brusque and not overly welcoming. On making the reservation, we had asked for a room on a top floor but when we checked in, we were told it was not "possible" to make such a request. No big deal, just not what we'd been told. The free breakfast isn't really worth it - the space is very small and the selection limited. We opted to walk down Waverly, across the Avenue of the Americas to a very nice local restaurant. So the location is great - the rest just average.

What a jewel! Quiet. Immaculate. Possibly the most comfy hotel bed ever. Furnishings and paintings from the art deco era adorn the rooms and lobby. It makes for an elegant yet relaxing home away from home. A nice continental breakfast is included -- yogurt and fruit, not just pastries -- and strong black coffee. And the restaurant downstairs is convenient. With the A line one block away and Stumptown Roasters another block away, this hotel on the edge of Washington Square is in the perfect location. I will definitely return.

Based on the mixed reviews, and the fact that it was the cheapest hotel in the area, I wasn't expecting much. I knew it would have smallish rooms (it's New York City) and expected it to be antiquated. Sure, the room was on the small side (expected), but the decor and ambiance leaned more toward quaint than antiquated.

The window unit air conditioner did a fine job of cooling the room, the queen bed was comfortable (the other option I had was 2 twin beds), and the bathroom was simple, but clean. The television was definitely too small, but I didn't spend much time in the room, so it wasn't an issue. My room had a couple of windows, but they faced a sort of interior courtyard that really only served to bring natural light to the rooms. There are probably only a couple of rooms per floor that face Waverly Place, so don't expect much of a view unless you get one of these.

The staff was friendly, especially Ronnie and the other gentleman that served as bellman. The location was outstanding for anyone visiting the Washington Square area, including NYU and Greenwich Village. There are many close restaurants and the W. 4th St subway station is less than a block away with direct service to the A, B, C, D, E, F, and M lines allowing you to travel to such locations as One World Trade Center (E), Chinatown and Little Italy (B, D) in lower Manhattan, all the way into Midtown and to the Upper West Side (A, B, C) without changing trains.

My room included free wifi internet (which was snappy) and a continental breakfast. For the breakfast, you have choice of a self service buffet right off the lobby, or a restaurant setting where the staff offers juice/coffee/tea, fruit, and pastries. if you choose, there is also a limited a la carte menu from which items may be purchased.

Overall,

If you are looking for a clean, efficient and friendly hotel in the middle of Greenwich Village, this is the perfect place. The room was on the small side, but had all the amenities - good coffee, gym, robes, free wii-fi and central air. The TV was small, but who needs a big TV when visiting NYC. A great find - reasonable, excellent service and comfort...

Its in Greenwich. You feel safe walking around. I walked to ground zero from the hotel. A nice hour walk and you can also walk along the river all the way downtown. Then you come back with line 2 or 3 to 14th street. A lot of nice restaurants around the hotel. The room was clean but the shower grout needed a little refreshment. Its small. The air conditioning is loud but NY gets cool at night and you can open the windows and sleeps with NY city noises! The elevator is very tiny-small. A large man a a tiny woman feel sqeezed. I was on the last 9th floor bringing me an empty elevator but I saw many other guest on other floors having to wait for the next. Its also walking distance to Washington square park. A mini Arc-de-Triumph with a fountain! Free wifi.
