“Great Location at a reasonable price”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 July 2014

This is an older hotel that is not in perfect shape but offers an exceptional location (less than a block from times square and minutes from tons of theaters, bars and restaurants) at a price that's significantly cheaper than the fancy hotels nearby. Otherwise, it's clean and the staff are friendly. A great bonus is the "Rum House", a little bar on the ground floor that features exceptional live jazz every night of the week.

We went to the Edison with an open mind. I was hoping that the consistent complaints about the rude front desk staff were examples of "off" days. Nope, they are exactly correct. Bored, disinterested. Down right blatant... rude. I can only imagine how challenging it would be to deal with weary tired frustrated tourists all day every day. However, when one works in this industry you would think some people skills would be a help!

Before I start, I would like to voice a DISPLEASURE.
I would like to warn fellow guests not to buy the 'hop on hop off' tickets from the transportation counter in the lobby. What one is not informed is that those tickets have to be validated at the 'hop on hop off' office somewhere else, which is a huge INCONVENIENCE.
In the meantime the transportation counter has already taken the commission, and the bus company representative street vendors will not give one the time of day because they will not earn any commission from tickets already sold.
Better to buy directly from those vendors.
WE WASTED AN HOUR - being ignored at the bus stands, asking questions getting no answers, before a kind bus driver told us to walk to the 'hop on hop off' office, then queuing for the validation, and walking back to the bus stand.

The 900 room Edison is an old hotel built in 1931, and it shows. We had a classic room, which means small bathroom, queen bed, w/o complimentary wi-fi, fridge, safe, drinking water, breakfast, coffee/tea making facilities or disposable room slippers. But there is a flat panel TV, iron and iron board, just enough drawers and wardrobe space, two cosy armchairs, desk and chair.
We wanted to upgrade to a signature room which means refurbished, renovated, w king size or twin beds. But the hotel was full....because of its excellent location, I think.

We were there for 8D/8N.

Located in the heart of Times Square, the hotel has two entrances. The main one is at 47th St, and the other at 46th St. Very convenient. And also between 8th Ave and 9th Ave. Broadway is just a street away. So the theatres are just walking distances.

Housekeeping is brisk and thorough. Although old, the room is clean. Towels are soft and white, toiletries are adequate. Only COMPLAINT, which is voiced by many guests, is the hot and cold water system. The shower can suddenly become v cold or scalding hot. We soon learnt to be wary. This problem must be fixed before a serious accident happens.

Security is strict, which makes us feel safe. All guests have to produce their room card keys to a security personnel before proceeding to the elevators.

The reception service was friendly; promised us our room as soon as one was available. We had arrived at 9am after a very long flight. Check-in is usually 3pm. We breakfasted at the hotel café, and soon after at 12 noon was assigned our room.

What I enjoyed most is the 'old' art-deco lobby w beautiful huge floral arrangements, 'old' pictures and paintings. And every Tuesday and Friday, the hotel hosts complimentary wines and cheese and biscuits from 5-7pm at the lobby, for all guests. What fantastic PR.

Being in the city that never sleeps, it was a very noisy experience for us at nights. Even though our room was mid high, we could hear police and ambulance sirens every night.

Room Tip: Pick a high floor room, on the inside, for a quieter experience.

Read a lot of reviews commenting on the hotels quality , which i found to be fine.
Lets be honest , you can pay a lot more in NY and get better quality , but to be fair the Edison is good value.
The location is excellent , being just around the corner from Times Square , and the Rum House bar is worth a visit.
At the end of the day the rooms are clean with comfortable beds , and as we only used the rooms for showers and sleeping , served their purpose.
If you want to be critical , yes the older rooms need some TLC ( Coffee maker would not go amiss), but I if asked if i would return it would be a yes to the Edison.

My husband and I stayed here for a week in June 2014. Is in a great location for tourists - right by Times Square - and its got a beautiful art décor lobby area. Check in and check out was swift. The room was basic but the bed was comfortable and the shower was powerful and when in New York you're barely in your room anyway so why would you want anymore? All staff were friendly and pleasant, I have seen some complaints on here about the security guards asking to see room cards before getting in the lifts but I could only see it as a good thing - you need to get your card out anyway once you get to your room about 30 seconds after getting in the lift, and it stops random non-guests from going onto the guest floors, also all security guards that we encountered smiled and said hello and were by no means menacing.

The wine and cheese reception which the hotel does twice a week was brilliant and was better then I thought it would be - loads of different cheeses (and crackers) and enough wine to have a couple of glasses each!

I would definitely choose to stay at this hotel again if I visit New York in the future.

Stayed here in April for five nights. The lobby looked gorgeous but once we got to our floor I was surprised. Felt like a haunted mansion. The room was tiny and there was no space to even breathe or keep our luggage. No powerpoints. Location was fantastic and staff were helpful.

I stayed at this hotel in June for four nights.
They hotel gave us a free upgrade when our original room was not quite what I was expecting.
The hotel staff was very accommodating and the hotel was very well located and easy walking distance to everything I wanted to do.
