“Don't Stay Elsewhere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 July 2014

I lived and worked most of my life in Manhattan so am pretty familiar with the hotels around the city. When I book a trip to NYC I don't even think about staying in any hotel other than the Blakely. My travel agent knows my room type and floor preference and just books without consultation with me. There is nothing about the Blakely that is unsatisfactory. Mr. Hartman, the General Manager, knows how to run a hotel. All the staff are friendly and efficient. My accommodations have always been throughly cleaned each day. Beds are very comfortable, and the hotel is non-smoking. WiFi is free of charge. The Blakely is known for its somewhat European atmosphere, and service. Those who have traveled to Europe will know that small hotels in big cities typically do not include the benefit of views. They generally are situated among large, tall buildings. Views are not what small hotels are about. Service, peacefulness, and friendliness is. New York is a big, noisy, city that operates full blast twenty four, seven. It's not the place to be when looking for tranquility. One is constantly bombarded by the incessant noise and smells. The Blakely, as opposed to the large hotels, attempts to limit these drawbacks to staying in the city better than most. I rated the hotel five stars because that is what it deserves. The restaurant however is another matter altogether. Do not waste your time eating in it. There are several very good restaurants within a block of the hotel that serve good food at, for NYC, reasonable prices. These are restaurants the locals eat in. NYC is not an inexpensive place to stay. If paying for breakfast in addition to the hotel room is a financial burden, there are numerous hotels right across the river in New Jersey that might better fit your budget.

Room Tip: One bedroom jr suites are great for families because there is a pullout sofa in the living area. In...

Last january I went to New York and my stay couldn't be better. This was the second time I went to The Blakely NY and didn't have surprieses. The bedroom was super confy, the breakfest was lovely. Rained a couple of days and the hotel provided umbrellas to the guest!
Certenly the next time I go to NYC I'll in The Blakely NY!

Room Tip: All the rooms are verygood. The one I stayed had a view to the hotel street.

This hotel is a great value for the room depending on when you go. We were able to stay here during a non-peak time so the price was great. We loved the location and we also liked the suite we were able to get. It was nice to be able to put the kids to bed and then relax in the sitting area. The breakfast was a nice perk also.

Excellent service, comfortable room for our family of four in two double beds, clean and well equipped with in-room coffee maker (great coffee), fridge, much needed very good AC (93 degrees), free wifi throughout. Location perfect for midtown exploring and subways (W55th between 6th and 7th), few blocks from Columbus Circle and Central Park, 5th Ave shopping, easy walk to Times Square. We walked back from Empire State Building on 33rd St, easy walk taking in 20 blocks while enjoying the city along the way. Good continental breakfast included, all in all a wonderful stay

We were disappointed when we arrived, to find that we were in a 2nd floor room when in fact we had asked for a higher floor. They immediately moved us to a higher floor, the 6th floor which could have been higher but at least the noise level was better (not as much traffic noise, or horrendous crashes from the bottle bank!!).
This hotel is in a very good location and my friend and I were quite impressed with how pleasantly set out the room was with the little sitting room between the beds and the bathroom. However, the room we got moved to on the 6th floor didn't have any doors on the closet and there was a rather sharp metal cleat sticking up off the floor that we kept stubbing out toes on which was a bit of a nuisance.
Quite a lot of scaffolding outside so the view was a bit limited.
Breakfast was the basic continental type but was adequate and kept us going till lunchtime.
Most of the staff were very nice and attentive, the odd one a bit offish but then you will always get that I suppose.
Overall I would rate this hotel as very good.

Good location. Decor is nice traditional but dark. They had scaffolding across the front and so our room had a half window view. TV had snowy picture. Right now the restaurant is closed for renovation and they give you a card for Au Bon Pain across the street. It is so busy, we didn't use our free breakfast cards. Stay someplace else until they are finished remodelling.

Room Tip: Ask for a light room.

Had 5 nights at the Blakely at the end of June. The room was fine albeit a bit tight for 2 adults and 2 teenagers. Great facilities though, and the couple of early glitches ( nowhere near enough towels for 4!), sorted very quickly. And let's face it, when in NY, you aren't in your room for long as so much to do. The location of the Blakely is great- you can walk to Times Square easily, plus cover all of the Central Park area. And the. You have subway stations at the end of the road that have you down in the downtown areas in no time. Staff were generally really attentive and willing to help us out. The only gripe is the woman in the breakfast area who utterly ignores you and only engages when she has finished serving others drinks. We were stood at the door to be seated and she looked right through us as if we weren't there- what would it have cost her to say ' I'll be with you in a minute'. Really not good.

That one issue aside, I would definitely recommend The Blakely as a place to stay when in NY.
