When we arrived, it took awhile to check in--we were asked to wait in the lounge for a few minutes, but then the (harried) clerk gave us a free upgrade to a nice big renovated room, like the one we'd had last spring. Our son and his girl friend got a tiny, very overheated room, and were moved to a another tiny room, but with reasonable heat.
Don't count on having breakfast here, but there are three Starbucks in the neighborhood. The location is GREAT! Close to 5th Ave., subways, Empire State Bldg. and the Bolt Bus stop.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the renovated rooms

This was my third time in New York City, this time with a friend instead of family. I'd not heard of the Herald Square Hotel before, even though I stayed around the corner last year at the Hotel Stanford.

The hotel holds alot of history as it was the original home of 'Life' magazine many moons ago.

We arrived on Friday afternoon, a very snowy, one at that, but the sun was out and the sky was blue, what more could you want? We got a friendly welcome at reception and where allowed into our room right away (usually most hotels abide by a strict 2/3pm rule). To the right of reception is a small seating area with coffee served at various times throughout the day and a LOVELY seating area at the front of the hotel which made me feel like I was sitting in an old 1920's explorers living room. Fantastic.

My first impression of the room was that it was outdated, VERY outdated. Faded carpet, light switches that look like something Thomas Edison himself installed and a really old, chunky TV. Not really what they show on their website. Having said that, we had two double beds with the nicest matress' I've ever tried.

The bathroom was very small, not enough room to stretch out your arms, but again, the toilet/sink/shower where all new. Great power shower.

I wasn't aiming at luxury as we got the room for £320 for 4 nights, I simply wanted somwhere to sleep...this fit the bill. Set in one of the quieter streets, it was nice to put your head down at night and listen to that typical NY police siren in the distance.

Hotel is in a prime location, about 2 minutes from Herald Square, easy access to the Subway system and a 10, 15 minutes walk into Times Square. Also, the fact that the Empire State Building is 2 minutes away made it even better.

My only real complain about the room is not wanting to get out of the comfy bed in the morning!

Overall, I enjoyed my stay here. I loved the rustic feel to this family owned hotel and would reccomend staying here to anyone!

Very good location. Close to subway stations, Penn Station, lots of restaurants. The hotel is very clean and comfortable. For less than $130 per night (including tax), it is a perfect place for travelers to crash for night. There is locker for rent to store luggage. The locker is big enough for large backpack. Very basic service, but with the location, you do not need much service from the hotel, except bedding and shower.

My husband and I arrived from the UK for an overnight stay before we took the train to Washington. We were very pleased with the hotel. it was close to Penn street station and the Amtrak. It was very clean and good value 150 dollars with tax included. Excellent value for manhattan. The room was large and the bathroom huge with a wonderful shower and deep large bath, again unusual for NY. I would certainly recommend this hotel for an inexpensive option right in the centre.

There are a lot of nice things about this hotel, but don't try to go to sleep here when it is cold outside. The hot water pipes are being attacked by a couple of gremlins with hammers. I am not able to sleep enough to get my REM period. The person at the front desk says that residents find this cacophony “soothing”. Is this supposed to be a hotel for Manhattan residents? He also says there is nothing that can be done about it. Seriously?
Something interesting about their web site, gives a clue about their management: Notice that the "Contact Us" link on the left side of the page goes to a valid email address; but the link on the following page, to communicate to the manager, gives an invalid email address, more than once:
http://www.heraldsquarehotel.com/com.htm
Except for the fact I can't get a good night's sleep, and the management is feigning accessibility, the other good reviews are on the money, great hotel.

I travelled here by myself in Feb 2011 for 2 nights and would have no hesitation in heading straight back there. The value for the price is hard to beat! The location is very central and an easy walk or subway ride to most NY attractions.
The highlight for me was arriving at 7am after flying in overnight, I dropped past the hotel to drop my bags so I could explore the city and was told I could check in 7 hours early for no additional charge! I have never experienced that elsewhere!
The room was everything I needed, neat and clean, unless you are planning to spend hours per day in there then this is all you need. There was a little bit of noise from the street but not enough to stop me sleeping!
Brilliant place to stay.

After the snow storms in NY, getting to this hotel was a godsend. The massive bed itself is the reason you should stay here.

Herald Square is actually the old LIFE Magazine location, so its actually historic. The other reason you should stay is that its between 5th and Broadway, so you can walk up to Times Square or down to Wall St in no time.

WIFI is fine, the room itself is quite big for 1 person. Even if its the smallest room, its massive! They give you an AVEDA soap, it smells amazing.

LCD TV is also great. Free coffee in the lobby.
