“Conveyor belt-ish”
Reviewed 25 June 2014

A busy hotel right next to site of WTC. Not the prettiest in terms of surroundings but convenient location for shops and food (though not great restaurants, more touristy joints, food chains, diner/cafe types, pizza places offering pizza by the slice, etc). We had some mix up with bookings when we checked in, and later attempts to rectify were not entertained as room payments taken up front; we asked if a booking fee could be reversed and was told 'no' one day by someone manning front desk who didn't seem very helpful, and 'yes' and sorted within 5 minutes another day, which was great, but made us wonder what all the kerfuffle was the first time round. All in all, had the feeling that this is very much a large established hotel, the sort that from check in to check out feels quite perfunctory and conveyor-belt-ish. So serves the purpose as a place to stay in terms of a roof over one's head and a bed to lie in, but not one which encourages lingering or lounging about. No frills, straight up hotel, has all the usual standard amenities (safe in room, TV, ensuite bathrooms, bar fridge etc) but wi fi in rooms cost $14.99 per day not incl tax, which is a pity for a business type hotel like this. Beds deserve a mention though -- very comfortable bed and pillows. We paid between $260 to $320 per night depending on the day, we stayed 4 nights -- weekday rate was more than weekend. We ate at Bill's downstairs -- food was average. BLT Bar and Grill opposite (back entrance) was better. For coffees, we popped downstairs to the Starbucks next to back entrance a lot as I didn't like the coffee in the room. (Tea/coffee making facilities available in room) But strangely, the Starbucks closed at 6pm each day; quite odd as they looked busy all the time and imagine many of those staying at the hotel -- like us -- were using it quite a lot.

Stayed for a week and commuted to Staten Island everyday via the ferry. This was very nice because you can park at the Whitehall ferry terminal for $7/night and avoid both the traffic getting into Manhattan and the high parking prices. The Marriott has a great concierge lounge, it's within walking distance to everything downtown, and it was much more quiet than staying in midtown. The attached restaurant, Bill's, had excellent food. Nearby subway stops can get you anywhere you need to go after only a short walk. Great location.

We got a 148 usd rate per night which we found was good value for the money. However, if we had paid full price I think we would have been very disappointed. Pros: Thann Amenities which was nice; flexibility and giving us 2 beds instead of 1; good location downtown; good doormen. Cons: staff fairly disinterested (reception); rooms dated (they need to remodel).

The New York Marriott Downtown is my go to hotel in NY. The staff there is friendly and professional; but Chef Edward Pasch standout an exceptional. Most importnatly, as the Chef, Edward Pasch is excellent at preparing dishes. He takes a great deal of pride in the taste, presentation, and the customer experience. In short, he is everything you want and expect in a Chef (and I have a good sense since my immediate family includes gourmet chets. My (chefs) hat is off to Edward Pasch. He will keep me coming back to this Marriott property.

Green Features: The practices at this property are similar to other hotels. They look to preserve on water and this is a non-smoking environment.

Excellent location for visiting Lower Manhattan, especially the World Trade Center site. Hotel is right around the corner from the new 9/11 Museum & Memorial. Very convenient to all sights in the financial district, and Statue Of Liberty. Hotel was very clean, and the staff was extremely helpful, and friendly. Wifi worked well in the lobby, but not so much in the rooms on the 36th floor. Bill's Bar & Burger is connected to the hotel with very good food.

Next to the financial district, and the Battery park. Excelent rooms, very spacious. There is a huge bar serving excelent burgers, one of them being awarded top 10 burgers 2013 by the CNN. Walking distance from the Statue of Liberty ferry.

Nice hotel. We loved the location right near WTC Memorial and downtown is our preferred area, particularly at night. It was so nice to walk down by the river at night looking over to Jersey City.

Room was a little dated but comfortable. Nice big bed. A/c packed in on our last night though and it got very hot indeed.

Surprised no free wifi in room - these days that's quite unusual. Does anyone still pay for wifi? Really?

Ate in Bill's Bar & Burger - surprisingly good.

If we could get the same great rate we'd stay again.

I hope we can see you again so we can truly wow you.
