Entrance from W52nd St. has a small lobby area with Bell desk. Staff here are very helpful with bags and cabs. There are 2 elevators up to the reception lobby and at morning and evening peak times there is always a queue.
We had no wait for the check-in process with several desks at reception, however we arrived early (midday for a 2pm check-in) and had to wait until after 3pm for our room. Our daughter did not receive the advertised “special welcome and personalised gift”. We were tired from travel so just chilled in the Supernova restaurant/bar. The decor is more nightclub than hotel and was fine for the restaurant, but the lighting in reception would be better served with a more traditional styling.
Our room on the top (33rd) floor was exactly as advertised - King and sofa-bed, with enough space for the three of us. This IS NYC so be prepared that “enough space” is a relative term. Furnishing and fittings all new and clean and decor felt light and airy. Room had flat screen tv, refrigerator and bedside radio/alarm with iPhone (4 or earlier - no thunderbolt) connect/charging. The in-room electronic safe happily fitted laptop, multiple ipads and all our other valuables.
The bathroom was spacious although the choice of Dark tiles made it appear a little gloomy. There is no bath, but the shower area is very generous. The sink is a triumph of form over function and while it suits the decor, the shallow and sloping sides ensure there is always a slop factor when using it. It does look good though.
Over our 8 night stay the room was always clean with towels and consumables replaced daily. Housekeeping staff we passed in hallways always seemed friendly and cheerful.
The cordless telephone in our room did not work - we only had a speaker phone, and when raising this issue with reception or the operator were treated as if we did not know how to use it. (I spend around 100nights/ year in hotels - I can use a phone). It took 3 days to get maintenance action. German(?) the engineer who eventually arrived was very helpful and polite, not only trying several options to fix the problem, but following up to ensure the fault was fixed. At no stage during our 8 nights could the hotel stop the message waiting light from flashing on the phone - blaming the message service provider. I suspect they did not try.
With 33 floors to descend, it became apparent there are not enough elevators to cater for the number of rooms in this hotel. The elevator rapidly filled to capacity and we would pass floor after floor and guests would turn away to wait for a less crowded ride. Morning and evening there were always queues in the lobby for the next car up. Be sure to allow extra time for this when departing for morning or evening commitments.
The highlight of Supernova is the outdoor bar area overlooking Times Square. Plenty of seats and it is a great place to unwind after a day out. You can certainly get a cheaper drink in the local area but the view was worth the hotel prices. The menu was fine for a one day stay but is very limited. Likewise the room service menu is austere to say the least. New York is not short of places to eat or drink but it is a lost source of revenue to the hotel to encourage people to spend elsewhere, and when we were tired and just wanted a quiet room service night we still ended up going out due to the lack of choice.
There is a selection of iMacs in the lobby for internet needs and a couple of video game consoles connected to flat screen tvs for the kids. As Accor Advantage members we had free in-room wifi but check your room rate conditions for that. Wifi speed was adequate for all our needs.
For the location and overall service we can recommend Novotel Times Square for a family stay in Manhattan. We raise a couple of issues above but they are actually minor in context and not enough to lower our review to a 3. If you need somewhere close to Times Square and Broadway this is definitely a hotel to consider. We will stay again.
