I stayed at "The Sanctuary" this past weekend. All in all -- a pleasant stay. Lets start with the positives: While there are still a few remnants of the old Portland Square (which was a dump) -- renovation appears mostly complete. Service is top notch. Greetings with a "hot towel" at check-in (which was especially a nice touch on the gloomy and grungy day that I checked in). Follw up call after check-in toask about satisfaction iwth the room, etc. Warm greetings and welcomes as you were coming ang doing. The room appointments were lovely -- really tasteful and maximized the allowable space very well. Beds were comfortable and there were alot of nice "green" touches for those who are environmentally conscious.
Now -- the not so good: The room was a shoebox. It was a nice shoebox - -but a shoebox all the same. My guess is around the 140-150 squar foot range. The sad thing to say is that there are actually SMALLER rooms than these in NYC. But still -- this is too claustrophobic. Adding to the claustrofobia was that our "window" gaced a cement wall about one foot in distance from it. We were on the third (low) floor. I booked through travelzoo and always wonder if rooms like these are the "travelzoo specials". And truely in poort tases is one of the remnants from the Portland which is the "red carpet" on the steps as you enter the hotel. It is truely filthy -- and grungy with red "tape" over all of the tears. Since this is one of the first things you see -- it leaves you with the impression that the rest of the hotel will be dirty and grungy ---which is not the case. But they REALLY need to do something about that ---FAST.
So-- although a decent place --truth is you can do better for your $$ in NYC. As stated, got this on a travelzoo special but would NEVER pay nay more than I did for this place. The Sanctuary is placing itself in the NYC "boutique" hotel market --and it has many (and better) competitors. Foremost of the competition is the "Kimpton" group of hotels in NYC. All of the as high or even higher on service (free wine hours, etc), as nice or nicer in furnishings, and all larger in room size (their low starts at about 200sq feet). They are similar in price point but surpass overall by a landslice.
Would i stay here again? Yes. But only if the price was on a special reduced rate and there were no other Kimpton hotels available.
But certainly a nice and worthy effort --
