“Great location, not luxury”
Reviewed 9 June 2012

Smack in the middle of Times Square which is a mixed blessing. Quite a lot of street noise even on the 18th floor. Room was fine, decent size and seemed clean. No robes?! Not sure what the deal is with this trend to hip bathroom doors that are either peek a boo or are otherwise privacy challenged. The R wan't as bad as some places, especially in northern Europe, but what's wrong with just a regular door? Service was fine but my platinum status didn't seem to count for much here.

Room Tip: Get as high a floor as you can. Decent inexpensive deli right across the street. Breakfast for two...

We are Marriott members and stayed at the Renaissance using our points. We chose it for the location which can't be beaten if you want to be central. After checking in we headed straight to the renowned R Lounge only to be found that all the prime seats were "reserved". The service in the bar was not particularly friendly (maybe because we weren't eating) and the drinks were very pricey but the views were undeniably special. We were going out for the evening but decided to come back later for a night cap. To our huge surprise on returning around 1am we discovered the bar was closed, lights were full on and the bar and lobby were being hoovered! We were informed there was nowhere else to get a drink which seemed incredible in a residential hotel in the centre of NYC. What happened to the city "that never sleeps"? The rooms were nice enough and we enjoyed a good breakfast but we wouldn't choose the hotel again given the limited bar service after hours.

The hotel's location is great for being in time square or seeing shows. The rooms are starting to show some wear. The carpets did not look real clean. The furniture has some nicks in it. The service was mostly okay. The free breakfast was to be served until 10 am. We got there at the same time as another couple about 10 minutes before 10 and they were all ready taking the food out of the room. The waiter just said to get our food fast because they were closing. Not very customer friendly. We are gold members and I didn't really see any advantage. The concierge was friendly and helpful. I don't think we would stay here again. We were scheduled to stay 3 nights at the beginning of our vacation and then were planning to move to a different hotel in Soho. But we moved after 2 nights.

Everything about this hotel was great. We arrived at 8:30 AM and we were able to check in. Our room was on the 6th floor, very clean and everything worked. The staff was extremely helpful. The best part for my daughter was the huge billboard of Nick Jonas outside our window. I laughingly referred to him as our "peeping Tom".

Room Tip: The mini bar is expensive

As a first time holiday and visitors to New York, the Renaissance Hotel was a fabulous place to stay as you are smack bang in the middle of the action.
We had 7 nights (April 7 to 13) in this hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. No need for taxi's, you can walk to most attractions or take the subway which is virtually located on your doorstep.
Staff were very friendly, attentive and most informative - especially Omar!!
Our stay was on the 12th floor and was surprisingly quiet - only heard the gathered crowd on the street below occasionally.
It was my birthday when we arrived and the hotel staff surprised us with champagne and chocolates - delightful! The 'R' lounge located on the lobby floor is a great place to unwind with a drink or for a nice meal/snack after an exhaustive day of sightseeing. The view of Times Square is second to none.
The Renaissance Hotel is your friendly boutique hotel, well run and without the crowds on your doorstep! A great place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room higher up if possible.

We just returned from a 3 day stay and this is the first time I have written a review. Hotel is in a great location right in the middle of Times Square but once you are inside it is peaceful and tranquil unlike other TS hotels i've stayed at. The rooms were clean and although there is traffic noise it did not keep my family up. Here is the best part of my review. I had left 2 very expensive designer handbags at the hotel. We called the next day after realizing it and spoke with Alex in security. THEY HAD THEM! The staff were amazing during our trip to NY but nothing is better for someone to know when booking a hotel that the staff not only can tell you the best way downtown but are honest.

We stayed over Memorial Day weekend and Times Square was crazy busy. Hotel staff did a great job managing the guests. Manny at the front desk went above and beyond with every aspect of our visit. It was so refreshing to have a friendly and kind person to interact with and get advice from. He was trustworthy. The doormen managed the valet parking well considering the challenges, maid service was friendly and efficient. Times Square is a very unique place to stay in New York so you have to be prepared for the crowd and the activity, other than that this hotel is terrific.
