“Mixed feelings about the hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2011

We've been on a number of occasions to NY previously and found other hotels generally of a better standard than the Shelburne. In part, price may reflect some issues - however we felt this shouldn't be the case.

In short, the hotel has potential, as most issues can be fixed.

On the plus side - the rooms are spacious, the beds very comfortable, the location handy and Amy, the concierge, a great advertisement for the hotel. Some staff on the front desk were also terrific however sadly this was undone by the attitude of other staff who seemed immature and unaware of good customer service tips.

Overall because a number of issues came up - we were disappointed with our stay: in particular the cleaniness of the bathroom was poor (for the first room which was allocated to us - so much so, had we not been so exhausted after a midnight check-in, we would have checked out); the necessity to move rooms during our stay and being told that the hotel's priority was to look after clients who were staying the summer (despite having booked a room earlier in the year); the lack of common sense with room service staff arriving to clean our room at 8am after we had only checked in at 1am. There were also issues around noise and the hotel's plumbing, with the necessity to call the plumber on 2 occasions.

Dear JBCO,
Thank you for your recent stay and the positive comments on our spacious rooms, comfortable beds, great location and for mentioning Amy our concierge.
I am very sorry your stay was less than perfect .We value your feedback and I will follow up with my staff to address any inconsistencies on our cleanliness and service levels.
We enjoyed having you as our guest and hope you will consider staying with us again; to give us another opportunity to provide our normal issue free stay.

As the other reviews indicate – this is a great hotel for exploring NYC. The room is immaculate, the décor cosy and modern. The bed is really comfy, and the air conditioning easy to control and quiet. The bathroom is lovely, and the toiletries really nice. The hotel is only a few blocks from both the Chrysler, and Empire State Buildings as well as the Pubic Library. For those who don’t mind a few more blocks you can also walk to Times Square -or just about anywhere else you want to. Not too far from the subway if you’re going that bit further. Great hotel, would definitely stay again when in NYC.
It would be nice to have wifi in the rooms, but when on hol - its doesnt matter too much. I guess if you're on business your company will pay for the in room service anyway!

I stayed at Affinia Shelburne on july. we really enjoyed the hotel!! It is well located, close to the Grand Central Terminal and metro. We had to take a little walk (10 mins) to Times Square and to Broadway. We walked back to the hotel late night 01:00 AM and it was safe. No need to get a taxi. Well, the room was clean, large bed, comfortable, great products, creams, shampoo, hairdryer, quick elevator, cool staff. They also kept some packages that I asked to be delivered at the front desk and they were very cautious about them. We really enjoyed!

The hotel is fine, clean, well located, the rooms are nice, etc. It´s more than an OK place to stay in NYC. However, when you think it´s a 4 star, well, I have some issues, and that´s what I want to comment on.

If you find a good rate, as we did, it´s great, but I don´t know if would pay more for it. Let´s put it this way - I didn´t see much difference btw the Affinia and the Hampton Inn 35th (well, the latter does include breakfast and free internet in the room!). In theory, this is a boutique hotel, but it lacks personality, so in our opinion it just looked like a good chain hotel.

So, the star difference could come from the service, but we have mixed feelings about this. Most of the staff, specially bellmen and service people, were very nice, but we had 2 or 3 bad experiences that left us with a bad impression.

First, the girl that made our check in found a way to make a comment about our rate that made us feel that they were making us a favor having us in the hotel (sorry, but I don´t set the rates!), but she forgot to give us an important message that was waiting for us. Another guy in the front desk told us later, and he was a little surprised that she hadn´t told us about it.

Second, we had several issues with the guys in the rooftop bar. Yes, it is a public bar, but it is in a hotel and they should treat the guests as guests and not as if they were trying to crash a party they´re not invited to. There´s a couple of bouncers that should learn to say good evening before checking your ID and letting you to take the elevator to your room (did I say that this is a 4 star hotel?).
It was annoying to be asked to return to my room to look for an ID even one hour before the bar was open (so, at that time there wasn´t any alcohol available, it was just the terrace of my hotel). I told the guy that I was a guest, that I´m 30 years old, and even that my husband and parents were with me, but he sent me down anyway. When I returned with my ID he didn´t even check it!

I don´t know if it´s a difficult place to work, but to me it´s weird to ride the elevator with a staff member of the hotel and not even to received a "hi!". It is not important, but it showed that the emphasis is not in the treatment to the guest. Again, I´m mentioning the exceptions here, but, yes, there were more than one.

So, in conclussion, the hotel by itself is nice, but it is not exceptional, so be careful with the price that you pay, because it hardly compares with other 4 -stars we know in the city (yeah, we always get good deals...) .

Dear Dania 15,
Thank you for your recent stay and for the positive comments on our Bellmen and front desk staff, clean rooms and excellent location. Our goal is to provide all our guests with exceptional service and I am very sorry we did not in your case. I thank you for your valuable feedback. I will immediately address any inconsistencies with the roof top bar staff as well as our normal high level of friendly service.
We enjoyed having you as our guest and hope you will stay with us again in the future, to give us another opportunity to provide you with our normal levels of true hospitality.
Sincerely,

Spent Memorial Weekend at the Shelburne. The staff was friendly and helpful - thanks Andy for the eats suggestions. The room was comfortable - loved the various options for pillows! Loved the terrace - the bar was closed for the holiday, but the terrace was open to guests. We grabbed a bottle of wine and some snacks for a nightcap. The views are awesome! The hamburger joint is a must try too. The only downside to the facility was the slow elevator. We're from Phoenix so it might just be that we're not used to having to wait for elevators...

I spent A long time choosing a hotel for the first visit in NY and am happy with the choice I have made especially taking into account a very competitive price we paid for the NY standards. Spacy clean rooms, nice, big bed with NO bed bugs :-), very convenient location, very close to
delis where you can buy nice
breakfast. Friendly service.

Sister and I spent 3 nights here. Room is well appointed. Large king bed with good quality linen. We never felt like we were sharing the bed with another person. Plenty of pillows and throws. Cable TV comes with room includes HBO, Food Network, TNT, ESPN etc. Water pressure is so so strong i kid you not, I remember thinking to myself in the shower OMG how much water is this costing the city. the first set of towels was very weird, leaving fabric fibers on our hair and shirt and everything in between. Like they overdid the fabric softener or something?! When housekeeping made the room and brought in more towels they were a more normal bunch. Our room was on the 10th floor, elevators were fast and efficient, never had to wait for one more than a few seconds. You could hear your neighbors a little bit in the hallway or if their shower is running. But it's not a big deal. We got a really good rate on quikbook.com so it made everything ever sweeter!
