Visiting from the UK for our 1st NYC experience, this hotel and neighborhood were recommended by a friend who used to live in Greenwich Village. Given its location, comparative cost and the manner in which its marketed, our expectations had been set suitably further north of the more modest alternatives.
The entrance and lobby are impressive; very well maintained and styled to a throw-back era reminiscent of the early 20th century. After bestowing the gift of luggage to the doorman, the check in process was done in a few short minutes and we found our room; 4th floor superior-queen facing W Broadway.
The room. Clean and well maintained, the decor consistent with the rest of the building. Lighting was pretty good and we didn't find it too low as some reviewers have highlighted (it may have been improved recently?). Bathroom was modest in size but we knew to expect a smaller overall space and found it to be fine. Lots of closet and drawer space, fresh linen and all the extra touches we would look for. Bath and shower were comfortable to be in with plenty of hot water.
The environment. The beds are super-comfortable, including the pillows which so many hotels tend to overlook. Double blinds block out 95% of outside lights. Corridors and neighboring rooms were surprisingly silent and we experienced no elevator noise. Air con was effective if not a little loud, however the cacophony of car horns, sirens and general melee coming from the street on the first and second nights (fri / sat) made for very uncomfortable rest. All of this external disturbance is of course outside of the hotel's control, but jet lag being no respecter of fault, a call to guest services became necessary......and yielded a surprisingly attentive result: the manager quickly offered to move us to a complimentarily upgraded room on the north side 10 floors higher. They even moved our luggage the next day while we were out so that it didn't impact our plans!
This customer focused approach to service always wins me over and it really helped us relax into the rest of our holiday. The trend of polite, friendly and helpful staff continued across the board and they helped make the hotel an inviting place to be. We felt valued and welcome.
Restaurant. We ate in the restaurant twice, both times without a reservation needed. The food was very good, although the menu range could do with being a little broader. When eating there on the Saturday night though, the bar was so crammed that the back of my chair was knocked several times and I had the disconcerting feeling as a group of 8 literally stood around our table while we ate. It's here that I have my one niggle; the hotel needs to decide whether this area is a bar or a restaurant, because at busy times it doesn't work as both.
Verdict. A very good quality hotel that does a lot of things very, very well. The right staff with the right focus. We'll be back.
