“ROBERT FROM ROSANNA”
Reviewed 10 May 2014

Stayed there for 13 nights from April 1 2014. Arrived after midnight and not impressed with unfriendly desk clerk who was only interested in up selling and offered no help with our bags or direction to our room. Not wrapped with our room (queen suite with kitchen and lounge) Room was very tired and worn .Next morning we were offered an upgrade at no extra cost to a better room . .It had had a makeover although things like floor based air cons had just been left in place and painted over in unprofessional manner. The room was a good size with 2 small bathrooms,,a basic but adequate kitchen , a lounge and 2 bigscreen TVs. One very loud air con was situated at the bed head( too loud to have on ) and the other one didn't work .A lamp in the lounge didn't work .One day on arriving back to the hotel our room hadn't been made up at 5.10pm.Went to reception who tried to justify by saying they were too busy getting ready for new arrivals Room was done around 6 pm .Not good enough!! . For several days only 2 lifts were operating which often meant a 10 minute delay for us on the 20th floor
Staff apart from the check in were pleasant and helpful particularly the 2 female consierges,
We paid $500AUD per night for this hotel and it fell way below expectations for that sort of money
Robert and Lyn

Room Tip: We had quite room on the back corner away from the elevators

I had stayed for a show at the hotel and all the right accommodations and guest services were great! The wonderful lady on the 21st floor was a great assistance to us during the show! I hope that the great service remains. The only thing that was bad was the elevator waits. There was maintenance during the show.

For some "planned maintenance" reason (which they apologised for profusely) I had to swap rooms during my 5-night stay; and that way I noticed how different the experience can be depending on the room you get. This quite quirky, partly worn, partly nicely renovated (originally Art Deco) hotel from 1929 has rooms and nooks of very different shapes and sizes.

The bed was excellent, cleanliness spotless, the shower minuscule, the restaurant too busy and noisy and crowded for comfort. Staff attentive and courteous. Location unbeatably central with Madison Sq Garden and Penn Station just opposite and an easy 5-min stroll to Times Sq.

All together a very good Midtown option.

My girlfriend and myself visited New York last December, just before Christmas 2013 for my 21st birthday. Staying at the Affinia Manhattan definitely contributed to the incredible holiday we had.
The lobby of the hotel is spectacular and on arrival all the staff were friendly and very attentive. My girlfriend had arranged to have a birthday cake delivered to our hotel room as a surprise for my 21st and had been e-mailing the hotel prior to help! They were fantastic and gave information for a great cake company, plus the concierge at the hotel they were just as helpful and accommodating to sort out the delivery, all of which arrived as a surprise to me on the morning of my birthday! (Not to mention the cake that arrived was amazing- ‘Empire Cakes’ if you are ever celebrating!!!)
We stayed for a total of 5 nights; our room was very spacious and clean with a good size bathroom/shower for the two of us, big, comfy beds, a small seating area and well applianced kitchen. Noise from outside was as expected from being in New York City but nothing excessive and it did not disturb us nor cause a nuisance. It is in a great location to Times Square and we were surprised with how short a walk (less than five minutes) it was, close also to Macy’s and the Empire State building which we loved.
We have both expressed how much we enjoyed our stay at the Affinia Manhattan and would not hesitate to stay here again when we next visit The Big Apple.

Stayed here for a 4 day trip.
Had problems with the wifi in the lobby and with the bathroom door, apart from that excellent location, hotel and experience.
Free wine tasting between 5-6 pm nightly and basically everything you would want, including an ironing board and iron.
care though, if you are a light sleeper, my room as noisy from the road junction and nearby fire station

After flying into JFK we arrived at the Affinia to find an Italian couple furiously arguing with the receptionist about their room. That set the tone for our stay. My wife and I had requested a quiet room on a high floor. What we got was a room on the sixth floor overlooking Madison Square Gardens on one side and a fire station on the other. It wasn't the people hanging out around Madison Square Garden that disturbed our sleep, it was the noise of the fire trucks sounding their horns at all times of the night that would wake us.

The room looked tired and shabby but as we had a packed schedule and were only resting our heads in the hotel it was passable.

On our second full day we had an answerphone message saying their was a message for us at reception. We went down to be told that their had been an error with our booking and that the room rate we had was invalid. We would need to pay an additional $50 a night.

For an extra $50 a night we could have stayed in a proper boutique hotel.

I went back to our room to get our booking confirmation. After ten minutes patiently arguing with a receptionist called "Diesel" they finally agreed to honour the room rates on our booking confirmation. It was at that point that I asked to speak to the manager.

I told the manager/supervisor that if it hadn't been for the offense caused by them asking us to pay an additional $50 a night and the patronising way they went about it I wouldn't have mentioned the following about our room:

- mould on the bath tub
- cracked sink in the bathroom
- peeling paint on the ceiling
- worn carpets
- cigarette burns on the table
- food stains on the sofa
- dusty and generally dirty

I showed the manager/supervisor our booking confirmation that said "welcome to the newly refurbished Affinia Manhattan" and asked whether we were staying in a refurbished room. Amazingly, he said we were! After listing out the issues with the room two or three times the manager agreed to send up a housekeeping manager to look at the room, to honour our original room rates and to deduct a further $50 from our bill. As we only had one more night, as we were tired and were now running late for brunch with friends we took it.

When speaking to the receptionist and the manager it felt as if they struggled to communicate with people when things went off script. It was if they couldn't use their initiative or common sense. There were a lot of "computer says no" moments.

Maybe we got a dud room but there seemed to be too many disgruntled visitors for that.

Extremely well located, and very good and friendly staff makes this a hotel I would recommend without any hesitation. We were in the Junior Suite, and our entire stay was pleasant and happy. Angel was really helpful and truly an angel for us. They went out of their way to do so many things that made our entire holiday easy and tension free. The check in and check out process was so swift that I was amazed at the efficiency. Housekeeping staff was friendly and reasonably efficient and the minor problems with the bathroom sink and the airconditioning was promptly addressed. I do suggest that the air conditioning in the bedroom be looked into as the bedroom has no window at all. All in all, excellent value for money hotel!!
