“Best location for tourists! Wonderful service!”
Reviewed 1 June 2014

The hotel is located across from Madison square garden. Walking distance to time square. Subway across the road. Many food options and fantastic shopping all in an easy walk. Service was wonderful and always helped with any query we had. We were upgraded to a larger room on arrival which was a great bonus. The room was very generous for New York standards, had a kitchen and serviced daily. The only downside would be that wifi was only free in the lobby, to use it in your room it's $16.95 for 24hrs and the room had some wear and tear. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in this area of NY

I can go all day about this hotel... There were pros and cons about this place. I was lucky to have a very good service lady who was very generous and the location near the Madison Square and not far from Times Square wasn't too bad.

The room:

1. Been years since I've seen window unit AC (Didn't work very well.)
2. Gnats in my showers... Every time I killed them, it seems like they double coming back.
3. Just DIRTY.

We had the best time here. The staff was so very helpful. The rooms are very clean. They made dinner reservations for us, helped us with sightseeing. They also have "cocktails" for their guests from 5-6 every afternoon. It was very nice. Would definitely stay their again.

The location is excellent and the staff very friendly. The room was a bit smaller than on my first visit but still spacious and well appointed. The food is very good as well. My only complaint was that the housekeeping staff was less conscientious than on my first visit. There was no coffee on our second day, as it has not been replenished. The dirty spoons had not been replaced and the bathroom floor had obviously not been swept or vacuumed. That being said, we will go back for another stay.

The Affinia Manhattan was recommended to us as it is a great location to see all that New York City has to offer. Let me say now that the location was indeed fantastic. That's where the good review ends. We stayed here for 16 nights. For $700 Australian per night, I expected a lot better.

Our booking was initially mixed up (not hotels fault) so we had to pay to upgrade to a room with 2 double beds. On arriving to our room, I also noticed several strands of brown hair in both bathrooms that were from the last occupants. The room with the beds was very cramped. Both beds also squeaked noisily with the slightest movement. The street noise and constant horn honking and sirens were just ridiculous. This hotel has a police station on one side and a fire station on the other side so the sirens were constant. Affinia did provide complimentary ear plugs but even these were not enough to drown out the noise. We were on the 13th floor and I could hear people shouting in the street. Part of the problem with the noise is that there are airconditioners fitted in the windows and the fitting is poor. There are significant gaps underneath the aircon units that allows draughts of air and noise in constantly. It did get quite cool at night and the air coming in through the gap was un-comfortable and there was no way to seal it.

The bathrooms were borderline. The ceiling in the ensuite was cracking and water damaged. The shower and sink were functional at best. The bathtub faucet leaked profusely when the shower was running and the plug in the bath also leaked as it was not siliconed around the side resulting in the bathtub not holding water.

We also had an incident where the water from the kitchen tap came out brown and sedimented. We alerted reception who sent an engineer up an hour later. At this time we also pointed out the flickering lights in the bathroom and the issues with the bath plug and faucet. The engineer put the brown water down to an airlock related to not using the water for a period of time. Considering we had been there 3 days already and used the water a lot, this seemed odd but his answer was solely reassurance. He did replace the light globes and offered to replace the bath faucet but said it probably won't fix the issue and that this is a common occurrence. He promised us a bottle of wine for compensation but this never arrived.

The rooms are furnished ok and the kitchen was functional. Housekeeping were lovely and the lady who did the majority of our housekeeping was fantastic.

Maureen on concierge is a wealth of information and the doormen are great. The lines at the front desk for information and check in were long. Unfortunately, everything you buy from the kiosk near the reception gets paid for at reception so the queues form quickly and move slowly. Overall, the foyer is lovely and presents the facade of this hotel as quite ritzy and comfortable. The room we were in was certainly not ritzy nor comfortable. I would not stay here again due to the noise levels alone.

If you want a relaxing place to holiday, this is not the hotel for it. You can't sleep well due to street noise and bed noise, and you can't have a relaxing bath as the water drains itself.

If you want just a central great location then this hotel provides that.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not on the side of the fire station and go as high up as possible.

Dear Sarah B,

We appreciate your review and feedback.
After reading your story, I’m very disappointed that we did not exceed your expectations this time around considering that our team is committed to making sure our guests are well taken care of and comfortable. Being that we are on Seventh Avenue and 31st Street, in the middle of New York City, at times the sounds of New York are audible throughout the interior, however, we do provide complimentary earplugs to “Put NYC on Mute” while you refresh. I would also like to thank you for the very nice comments you had to share regarding our friendly and helpful team.

We thank you for choosing Affinia Manhattan.

Sincerely,
Alex Spektor

I travelled with 4 other ladies & we booked a 2 bedroom suite. The room was large with great kitchen facilities i.e. a fridge to keep the champagne cool . The location is great, right across from Madison Square Gardens, Macy's just one block up, Empire State Building just round the corner & Times Square a 10min stroll away. The door staff were very friendly & always happy to help even sorting us an SUV to take us all back to the airport. You do hear a bit of street noise in the rooms but your in NYC, use the earplugs provided & you will fine. All staff at the hotel were incredibly nice & happy to help. We had a gentleman come to our room to check on our air con & we told him we were celebrating my nieces 21st birthday he came back with a bottle wine for us & some candy for my younger 14 year old niece. Lovely gesture. All in all a great trip, great hotel & would definitely recommend it.
